New Blog Location

With the release of TeeShotLive 2.0 and the Tee Shot Live web site, it is time to start winding down the old site and blog.  I will be keeping the TeeShotLive.com site up for a while as people migrate over, need to restore their backups, etc. but the blog is being replaced by the forums pages at the new site so for ongoing discussion of Tee Shot Live, check out the new forums site.  There are already a bunch of discussions going on over there, including information about new features that are under development so check it out.

As part of this migration, I am turning off comments on this blog, but you can add plenty of them at the forums site.

Thanks again everyone!

Big Changes with Tee Shot Live

Over the past few months, I’ve been hinting that there were some other new things coming for Tee Shot but we couldn’t quite tell you about it yet.  Well, today is the day when I can finally spill the beans!  I am pleased to announce that Tee Shot has been acquired by EA SPORTS and Tee Shot Live will be the first version released by EA. This is a great opportunity for Tee Shot to be able to really go to the next level and you will see the beginning of those improvements with Tee Shot Live.

While the iPhone application has all of the new features we mentioned in the earlier posts on Tee Shot Live, the big news will be the new TeeShotLive.ea.com website.  The new website lets you upload your rounds, store and share statistics and scorecards, organize custom groups and events, create virtual tournaments and upload, review and compare various equipment and gear with your friends and the community.   Now that we have this version out, you will start to see a lot more great new features coming from EA SPORTS.

We are all done migrating all of the courses and data backups to the new service and making sure that Tee Shot users are correctly migrated to the new application which will come from EA SPORTS.  Tee Shot Live has been released in the Apple iTunes store and you can now get the new version on your iPhone or in iTunes. TeeShotLive.ea.com is now also open and you just need to go create a free account there so you can upload your rounds, search for courses and connect with your golfing buddies online.

Since Tee Shot Live is now being delivered through EA SPORTS, it is technically a new application so you will not see the update automatically like you have with previous versions.  A large amount of the recent delay was spent working with Apple on ways to migrate existing users of TeeShot over so that the upgrade would be automatic and free, but in the end, Apple was unable to do this so the upgrade will take a little bit of work on your part.  Just go to the new app in the iTunes store and you can download it after paying for the new version.  For a short time after launch, EA is setting the price at just $0.99 so it is a very inexpensive upgrade.  We did try a lot of different options with Apple to make this transition simpler and free, but in the end, we were unable to make that happen. On the plus side, there is a lot of great new functionality in the new application for only 99 cents and you can do a restore in the new application and it will download your most recent backup from the old version of TeeShot.  We have also copied all of the courses over to the new website.

One other new feature that we have not yet shown is the new course search feature in Tee Shot Live.  Rather than going to the website to search for courses, you can now search right in the application.  Just enter part of the name or location of the course and you can choose from any of the found courses right in the application.  TeeShotLive does not have the ability to upload to oobGolf or to USHandicap.com but I think you will find that TeeShotLive.ea.com has most of the features that those services have and there will be more coming soon.

I am very excited about these changes and the opportunity they will create for the whole Tee Shot community. Here are some screenshots of the updated iPhone application and the new website so you can take a look before you download.

Finally, with this release, EA SPORTS will be taking over support for the product.  You will be able to stay in contact with them through the TeeShotLive.ea.com website and you can send support or feedback requests to teeshotlive@ea.com.  I want to thank everyone for their feedback and contributions since TeeShot was released.  The community support has been wonderful and I’m looking forward to seeing it continue to grow with the new web site.

Thanks to everyone and I’ll see you on the first tee!

Something fun, while we wait…

TeeShot 2.0 has been uploaded to the iTunes Application Store and we are now anxiously awaiting its approval.  There will be even more fun stuff to announce once it is live in the store, so stay tunes.

In the meantime, I wrote another little iPhone application that did arrive in the store today.  It has nothing to do with golf, but it is fun.  It is called Pic-Z Share and it is a little application for sharing photos between iPhones and iPod touches using the wireless bluetooth connection.   It’s quick, simple, fun and only one dollar!  If you’re interested, you can check it out.

And now, back to our regularly scheduled anticipation…

TeeShotLive is back!

TeeShotLive.com was unavailable from yesterday afternoon until a few minutes ago. Apparently, our hosting facility moved to a new data center so it took a little time to get it all set up again. Everything should be fine now!

TeeShot 2.0 Preview: GPS Updates

While TeeShot has supported GPS distance tracking since version 1.5, there have always been a few things that made it tough to use and even when you did use the GPS to track your shots, users often wondered where the extra goodness was that GPS should offer.  TeeShot 2.0 has several enhancements to make it easier and faster to use the GPS features on the iPhone 3G as well as a couple of new views that make it much more useful (and fun!) to track your shot locations.

First, the speed issue.  While it still takes a while for the iPhone to figure out your location when you turn on the GPS tracker,  it is much better at getting an accurate reading if you keep the GPS on for a longer period of time.  TeeShot 2.0 now has the ability to turn on the GPS tracking and to keep it on as you move about the application.  You can enable or disable GPS tracking on the home page as well as any page that lets you use a GPS location, such as the hole and group scoring page (for seeing your distance to the green) or the shot scoring page.  Just tap the target button on the left side to toggle the GPS tracking on or off.

The best time to do this is at the start of a hole when you want to set the tee box’s location.  You can turn GPS on at and then let it get an accurate location and save that location.  Before TeeShot 2.0, TeeShot would turn off the GPS as soon as you saved the location, but in 2.0 it stays on so you can hit your shot and start walking towards your ball.  When you get to the ball, TeeShot has been tracking you as you were walking so it already has a much better idea of where you are and you can see that as the distance to the green has been going down and the distance from your last shot is going up.

So now TeeShot is much easier to use for tracking your shot locations with GPS on an iPhone 3G.  But what else can you do now that you have set these locations?  Well, now you can tap the Display shot map option on the hole scoring page to see a map of exactly where each shot went from the tee to the green, overlayed on a Google Map of your course, all right within TeeShot.

The TeeShot 2.0 shot map shows you the location of each shot on a hole, right from the tee to the green.

The TeeShot 2.0 shot map shows you the location of each shot on a hole, right from the tee to the green.

Similarly, you can see the hole location and an overview of this hole by tapping the distance to green button on the group or hole scoring page.

So what about the folks who don’t have GPS and yet want easier measuring of shot distance?  TeeShot 2.0 has something for you too.  Just change the new Shot Distance Calculation setting from “GPS” to “markers” and you can enter the distance remaining to the green at the start of each shot and TeeShot will calculate the distance of your last shot.  You can figure this out by looking at nearby yardage markers and then entering it in the new Shot Measurement feature on the shot by shot page which takes the place of the GPS features when you change this setting.

Tap the distance to green button to enter your remaining distance to the green before this shot and TeeShot 2.0 will calculate how long your previous shot was. This is great for anyone who can't or doesn't want to use GPS to mark each shot location.

So there you have it.  A few more updates to make it much easier and more satisfying to track your shots in TeeShot 2.0.

But hmmm… someone who is looking closely at the screenshots above may notice something different in the shot tracking page.  The next button is sometimes an arrow and sometimes a plus.  What could that mean?  It means that the previews are not yet done and there are still more interesting things to post about TeeShot 2.0.  I’ll try to get the next post out quicker than I got this one out.

In the meantime, I’ll see you on the first tee!

TeeShot is Apple’s App Store Pick of the Week

I just got a call from someone to told me to take a look at the home page of Apple.com.  Sure enough, TeeShot is in their Hot News section listed as the App Store Pick of the Week.  Awesome!

Here’s what they say:

February 25, 2009

Play golf? Then you may want to size up TeeShot. Use it to score your foursome. Then email the day’s results to everyone from your iPhone. TeeShot lets you track your strokes, putts, fairways, clubs, distances, and other data. You can compare stats from your current round to previous rounds, use GPS to measure shot distances, download courses or create your own. And TeeShot gets raves for customer support.

Awesome!

TeeShot 1.7.4 Released

Hi Everyone,

Shortly after TeeShot 1.7.3 hit the store, I got a few reports that people’s handicaps were not showing up even though they had enough rounds.  Sure enough, when I added the ability to specify the type of round you played, I forgot to load it correctly for the calculations so no rounds would be included.  Oops!

TeeShot 1.7.4 fixes that issue and has been uploaded and released by Apple (first time!) so that issue should be fixed once you download this fix.

As always, you should back up your data to the TeeShotLive before installing the patch because there is a small chance it could get lost during the upgrade.  Better to be safe than sorry!

Super Sunday – Super News

I just got the notification from Apple that they have approved and released version 1.7.2.  Now, only seven weeks after it was originally uploaded, TeeShot 1.7.2 will soon be available for you to download.

Hoping to make any change that would push this through, I changed the version number in the application to 1.7.3, so if you check the version in the about page, it will say 1.7.3 and that is correct.

And now, for those of us in the US, it is football time!

TeeShot 2.0 Progress

While we’re waiting for version 1.7.2 to get released, progress has continued on TeeShot version 2.0.  There is lots of new stuff in there, much of which is based on feedback from users.  Improvements to GPS tracking, statistics, hole scoring entry, shot scoring entry and more.  I’ll be posting more detailed info in the coming weeks, but I figure with springtime just around the corner, I’ll show you a sneak peak at a couple of the new things in 2.0.

The most obvious change, though, is an update to the user interface. Now instead of a toolbar along the bottom, there is a tab bar which lets you switch between the different parts of TeeShot without losing your current location in other places.   The bar is split into five sections, Home, Courses, Statistics, Rounds and Players letting you view and manage each of these independently of the others, so if you’re in the middle of a round and you want to check your statistics or settings, you can jump there and back without having to dive back into your rounds again.

The statistics feature has also been updated with the ability to filter the rounds used in the statistics.  This lets you look at your rounds this year vs. last year, see how you’ve done over the past few rounds compared to overall, etc.  There is more to come here but this is a step towards making the statistics more flexible while maintaining simplicity.

This is just a quick taste of what is to come in 2.0.  In upcoming posts, I will go over changes in group scoring, shot by shot scoring, and the much improved GPS tracking and visualization. Stay tuned for more information.

1.7.2 – The Longest Release…

It has been nearly a month since I first uploaded version 1.7.2 to the iTunes application store and I have been going back and forth with Apple on icons.  At first, they rejected it because the Mail icon was a trademarked icon and I couldn’t use it, so I changed that icon. Then they rejected it because the preferences and Safari icons were trademarked icons.  Strange that you can’t use a preferences icon to go to preferences or a Safari icon to go to Safari, but I changed those too.  Then they rejected it because the + icon in the hole scoring page was the same icon you use for adding contacts and that would confuse people.  I’m not sure how that is the case, given that there is a minus icon on the other side and I doubt that anyone would think that the minus would delete a contact, but they asked me to change the color of it, so I made it darker (still blue, but a slightly darker shade.  Now they rejected it again because they still think it will confuse people and they want it to be a different color – not blue.  Each of these steps have taken between five and 12 days for them to get back to me and while I have sent emails to them in response, they have not responded to those mails.

Most of  the icons they are complaining about have been there since version 1.0 so they were approved seven times previously but apparently they are now focusing on this.

On the plus side, I am making some great progress on version 2.0 while all of this is going on.  I’ll post an update on what you can expect in that version in the coming weeks.

I know this is as frustrating for you as it is for me, particularly since some of the things that 1.7.2 fix are related to issues that came about when Apple shipped the latest iPhone OS but I am uploading it again, in hopes that my latest mail will get through and they are ok with this version.

-Chris

P.S. if anyone has been confused by the + icon on the hole scoring page, and thought that it would add a contact, please let me know.
