TeeShot 1.7.1

TeeShot 1.7.1 is on coming soon. I just uploaded it to the iTunes store which usually means it will be available in the next couple of days.

What’s new?  Well it isn’t a huge release but there are some nice improvements in version 1.7.1.

  • Upload rounds to oobgolf.com - Users have been asking for this for a while and I am really happy to announce it is here.  Thanks too the oobgolf folks for adding some new APIs to make this work.
  • Users with GPS enabled iPhones can now see the distance to the green for any courses that have beeb GPS tagged.  While this was possible in earlier versions for shot by shot tracking, it is now also available in the group scoring page and the hole scoring page.  When the course has the coordinates for the green, you will see a new option at the bottom.  Tap the little target button and it will give you the distance.
  • Lots of stability improvements. Some people were getting crashes in shot by shot scoring and I think those are all fixed now.  The group scoring page would sometimes have a problem where it would show a score from a previous hole.  That is fixed now too, but you need to dismiss the keyboard with the Done button before going to the next hole
  • Slope, rating and units are now editable for rounds.  Just go into edit mode to be able to change them.  You need to go to edit mode to change units on courses now too.
  • Screen rotation is disabled.  I meant to turn it off before 1.7 and forgot… oops! While it was interesting, it wasn’t terribly useful so I am going back to portrait only for now.

As always, your feedback is welcome so let us know what you think!

While it is getting a bit cold to play much right now, I still hope to see ya on the first tee!

Version 1.7 uploaded to Apple

I have uploaded TeeShot version 1.7 to Apple.  It should be available in the iTunes App Store in just a few days.  In addition to the features mentioned in my previous post,we are happy to announce our first online partnership with USHandicap.com.  TeeShot users who join USHandicap.com can get an official USGA handicap by simply uploading their data from TeeShot after each round. USHandicap.com also lets you compare your rounds with your friends, browse your full round history, access numerous statistics reports and take advantage of discounts and special offers available to USHandicap.com members.  TeeShot users can use coupon code TSS-001-XYUH-0809 to sign up and get 50% off of the regular membership price.

We have also updated our metric support to let you tag a course as being either in meters or yards.  Then, your using setting will translate between the course’s units and your preference setting.  When a round is started from a course that is tagged as meters or yards, the same translation will take place.  Any course or round that does not have an explicit yards or meters value will be assumed to be in whichever units the users’ preference currently indicates.

I’ll do another post when version 1.7 is available for download from the app store and then I’ll see ya on the first tee!

-Chris

Update: (Oct 20 7:00pm PT) Apple has really started to get the hang of the App Store release process.  Only one business day after I uploaded it, TeeShot 1.7 is now available in the store.  You should start seeing it as an update option within the next 24 hours.

TeeShot 1.7 preview

TeeShot 1.7 is coming along well and I figured now would be a great time to give you a preview of some of the features that are coming.  Most of these are near the top of the request list so thanks for all of the great feedback and keep it coming.

  • Sand Saves and Up & Down Tracking - There is a new option in the hole scoring page and in group scoring that lets you track sand saves and up & downs.  They also show up in statistics for both the round and overall stats.
  • Historical Graphs - You can now see a graph of your performance at a course or on a hole.  You need to have at least two values for it to show up (a graph of one number is — not very interesting) but then you can see how your scores have progressed over time.
  • Email scorecard - You can email the scorecard for a round to the players or to anyone you want.  The scorecard includes the key stats for the round for each player including strokes, putts, penalties, up&downs and sand saves.
  • Round and Hole Notes - you can add notes about the round or a specific hole.  You can record weather information, course conditions or the reason behind that double bogey (a coyote stole my ball - seriously!)
  • Updated Scorecard - The scorecard page now shows squares and circles around bogies and birdies
  • More statistics - highest/lowest scores are now for 9 and 18 hole courses, percentages for fairway and GIR in round totals, up & downs, sand saves
  • User Pictures - If the player was created from the address book, we show their user picture if it was set in both the player list and the round.
There is still a bit more work to do, then some localization and beta testing but it’s on the way.  As always, feedback welcome.  Screenshots coming soon.

Now Available: CourseBuilder 1.1 - Macintosh and Windows

Now that TeeShot 1.6 has made it into the iTunes Application store, I am happy to release an updated version of CourseBuilder that lets you tag greens with GPS coordinates from the comfort of your own desk.

This version of CourseBuilder comes with something new, though.  A Windows version!  CourseBuilder for Windows is now available and it works pretty much identically to how CourseBuilder for the Macintosh works.

You can download both versions from the CourseBuilder page on TeeShotLive.com and you can also read the instructions for tagging greens with GPS coordinates.

As always, we’d love to hear from you if you have any suggestions or problems with either version.

TeeShot 1.6

TeeShot 1.5.1 was going to be a quick little release with a couple of simple fixes in it, but as I received more mails from people losing data during updates due to the iPhone application update problem, I decided to add something to provide some more peace of mind for all TeeShot users.   So in addition to a number of fixes and small improvements to TeeShot 1.5, version 1.6 will also include the ability to backup and restore your entire database to TeeShotLive.

Once TeeShot 1.6 is available, you will see a new option in the Settings page that looks like this:

Backup/Restore in TeeShot 1.6

Backup/Restore in TeeShot 1.6

Tapping “Upload Data to Internet” will upload your entire TeeShot data file to TeeShotLive and store it in a location that is associated to your actual iPhone (or iPod touch).  Tapping “Restore Data from Internet” will then download that same data from TeeShotLive and replace your local database with this information.

You can back up your data whenever you like - after each round or just before application updates.  The restore will confirm that you want to replace all of the data on your device before actually pulling it down.

The information is stored on TeeShot Live’s servers.  It is not encrypted so it is possible that someone could download your data, though TeeShot does not allow you to download anything except for the data that was uploaded by your own phone.  In other words this is not really a solution for moving your information between two devices though we might be able to enable something like that once we add user accounts to TeeShot Live.

TeeShot 1.6 also includes a number of fixes.

  • Stableford round calculations are now correct for the main player and the course handicaps are calculated correctly
  • Courses with GPS data can now be downloaded to TeeShot. Once 1.6 hits the store, I will release the updated CourseBuilder that makes it easier to tag greens with GPS coordinates.
  • Group scoring now has an option to go from any user to their individual scoring page with one tap
  • Entering a value in the Group Scoring page automatically advances to the next field, so it takes fewer taps to enter a player’s score.  You need to try it to see, but it is much faster now.
  • Added a few countries to the countries list (hello Bermuda and Thailand!)
  • Added Danish and Italian as languages
  • Fixed an issue where a player’s scores from previous holes might keep appearing for subsequent holes in Group Scoring.
  • The look of many of the lists have been updated and should be a bit easier to read on the course.
I have uploaded version 1.6 to the iTunes Application Store as of today.  TeeShot 1.5 took about 11 days to make it through the process, though PracticeTee only took 8 days. There’s no telling when it will show up, but I have noticed that many of my updates have shown up on Fridays.  Coincidence?  Who knows…

Once again, I would like to thank our beta testers and localizers who did a great job!

See ya on the first tee!

iPhone GPS Limitations

This may seem like a strange post to write after finally releasing version 1.5 of TeeShot, which contains our first version of GPS support for the iPhone, but I have been getting a lot of posts and emails about adding more locations to courses and I want to explain the current state of iPhone GPS limitations based on my experience which helps to explain how we will evolve out GPS support.

It is probably useful to state that the GPS in the iPhone was probably designed to be useful for getting directions to places within a city, and getting a reading quickly to accuracy of a few hundred meters is generally sufficient for figuring out how to get to the nearest restaurant.  Golf, though, requires a much more detailed value and, while the iPhone can ultimately get you a reading that is pretty close, its GPS is not optimized for it.  This goes for any application, not just TeeShot.  In fact, you can generally see the exact same behavior in the Google Maps.  Start it up somewhere and see how long it takes to get a very accurate (ie. small circle) response for where you are.

As part of the preview for version 1.5, I wrote a bit about the limitations of the iPhone’s GPS accuracy in a golf situation.  You can read that here.  After playing more rounds with it, I figured now would be a good time to write more about my experience using the GPS features of TeeShot regularly.

The earlier article was about accuracy.  It said that the best result I had ever gotten was to an accuracy of 9 meters.  9 meters (~10 yards) is a big margin of error when choosing a golf club.  It is almost always the difference between one club and the next.  Today’s rounds on a course where I had used Google Maps to measure the center of the green showed that the number it gives you is pretty close to accurate, usually within 5 yards but it came at a price.  In my experience with my test phones two things have really surfaced as limiting factors:

  1. It takes a LONG time for the GPS to get an accurate location.  15-30 seconds usually.  This is tough when playing golf because you should be ready to hit your ball when you get to it and waiting 30 seconds for an accurate distance is pretty bad. It is also tough to tell when it has an accurate figure since it gives you a result quickly, but it is usually the last place you got a reading so you need to wait until it looks like you are about the right distance from your last shot, or to the green if you have those figures.  That is a lot of waiting and focusing on the phone when you should be thinking about your shot.
  2. Getting GPS coordinates takes a LOT of battery power.  My new iPhone 3G, which was fully charged before the round, was at 1/3 battery after nine holes.  Doing regular scoring for the foursome for the rest of the round used very little battery power.  It is the GPS that really drains the power.

So how does this impact the GPS features in TeeShot?  I have received a lot of requests for a way to support more than just the middle of the green as a target.  Users also want the front and the back of the green,  front and back readings for hazards and bunkers and more.  These are all terribly useful though they will also make it harder to define courses for TeeShot and they will also make using TeeShot more complicated.  I am happy to continue to work on improved GPS functionality like this if this is what TeeShot users would like, but I think users’ satisfaction with these features will be limited until the iPhone itself can be tuned to get faster and more accurate readings without draining the battery.

As always, I am completely open to feedback on how you would like to see the application evolve.

See ya on the first tee!

TeeShot 1.5.1 begins :)

As with any big release, there are issues that slip through our testing and the great input we got from beta testers and the lengthy Apple review process.

As people are downloading TeeShot 1.5 we are seeing two issues that I will be fixing for 1.5.1.  I am going to hold off a little bit before finishing it so that any other things that pop up can get fixed then too.  I figured I would start this post to let you know about them in advance to try to reduce any confusion or frustration.

1) Stableford scoring.  I am getting some reports that stableford scoring may have some issues with adding up the points for the main user.  I am investigating this now.

2) Downloading courses with geotagged greens marked.  I’m feeling pretty stupid about this one.  The course validation didn’t get updated to know about the geotagging fields, so you can’t download a course with geotagged greens in it.  Ugh.  I have a fix for this already.  Because of this, I am pulling back CourseBuilder 1.1 which makes it easier to set the geotag locations for greens because you wouldn’t be able to download the courses you had tagged.

If you have already downloaded CourseBuilder 1.1, please go grab 1.0.3 again (it is now back up on the site) and I will upload 1.1 again as soon as I get this issue resolved.

Sorry for these problems but I will get them fixed as soon as possible.

TeeShot 1.5 Approved!

I received an email from Apple tonight that TeeShot 1.5 has completed the review process and will be live in the store within 24 hours.  Thanks for everyone’s patience!

As a reminder, there is a bug in the iPhone that can cause data loss if you download updates directly on the phone so make sure you download the TeeShot update using iTunes and install it from there.  Apple is still investigating this issue but it has not been fixed yet.

Thanks again for your patience and enjoy 1.5!

Introducing PracticeTee

I am excited to announce a new iPhone application from TeeShot Software.

PracticeTee lets you get the most out of your golf practice time. Whether you are at the driving range, putting green, or practicing your short game in a practice bunker, PracticeTee lets you track all of your shots and then provides detailed statistics that help you look for weaknesses and see how you are progressing.

Trying out some new clubs? Use PracticeTee to see how you do with each one and make it easier to figure out which of those sweet new drivers should be the new big dog in your bag.

Check out some screenshots from the new application.

The primary goal of PracticeTee is to help golfers who are looking to get a little more out of their practice sessions.  Now you can track information about your shots and see how your practice changes over time.  Of course, you don’t need to enter all of the information for every shot — just enter what you want — but tracking your practice over time will give you a great picture of where your strengths and weaknesses are for each club in your bag and help you practice smarter.

PracticeTee will be available in the iTunes Application store soon for $8.99.  While it was uploaded to the store today, we’re seeing it take about 10 days to 2 weeks to actually go public.

As always, feedback is welcome!

-Chris
