TeeShot 1.6

TeeShot 1.5.1 was going to be a quick little release with a couple of simple fixes in it, but as I received more mails from people losing data during updates due to the iPhone application update problem, I decided to add something to provide some more peace of mind for all TeeShot users.   So in addition to a number of fixes and small improvements to TeeShot 1.5, version 1.6 will also include the ability to backup and restore your entire database to TeeShotLive.

Once TeeShot 1.6 is available, you will see a new option in the Settings page that looks like this:

Backup/Restore in TeeShot 1.6

Backup/Restore in TeeShot 1.6

Tapping “Upload Data to Internet” will upload your entire TeeShot data file to TeeShotLive and store it in a location that is associated to your actual iPhone (or iPod touch).  Tapping “Restore Data from Internet” will then download that same data from TeeShotLive and replace your local database with this information.

You can back up your data whenever you like - after each round or just before application updates.  The restore will confirm that you want to replace all of the data on your device before actually pulling it down.

The information is stored on TeeShot Live’s servers.  It is not encrypted so it is possible that someone could download your data, though TeeShot does not allow you to download anything except for the data that was uploaded by your own phone.  In other words this is not really a solution for moving your information between two devices though we might be able to enable something like that once we add user accounts to TeeShot Live.

TeeShot 1.6 also includes a number of fixes.

  • Stableford round calculations are now correct for the main player and the course handicaps are calculated correctly
  • Courses with GPS data can now be downloaded to TeeShot. Once 1.6 hits the store, I will release the updated CourseBuilder that makes it easier to tag greens with GPS coordinates.
  • Group scoring now has an option to go from any user to their individual scoring page with one tap
  • Entering a value in the Group Scoring page automatically advances to the next field, so it takes fewer taps to enter a player’s score.  You need to try it to see, but it is much faster now.
  • Added a few countries to the countries list (hello Bermuda and Thailand!)
  • Added Danish and Italian as languages
  • Fixed an issue where a player’s scores from previous holes might keep appearing for subsequent holes in Group Scoring.
  • The look of many of the lists have been updated and should be a bit easier to read on the course.
I have uploaded version 1.6 to the iTunes Application Store as of today.  TeeShot 1.5 took about 11 days to make it through the process, though PracticeTee only took 8 days. There’s no telling when it will show up, but I have noticed that many of my updates have shown up on Fridays.  Coincidence?  Who knows…

Once again, I would like to thank our beta testers and localizers who did a great job!

See ya on the first tee!

-Chris

  1. Again another great job! Thanks for working with the users- I got a chance to try this in beta and the data up load is a great feature! I Uploaded my data in one tap - Removed Tee Shot from my phone and then reinstalled with no data - and one tap my data was all back - including all my downloaded courses and additional players. I recommend you do the upload download when you are on a wireless ethernet connection -

  2. Chris, you rock. Thanks for the update! Can’t wait for 1.6.

  3. wow, this is great. I just bought TeeShot tonight and I can’t wait to try it. I really like how you let us all know what’s going on with the next updates, can’t wait for the new features.

  4. Hi, I just got the app. Looks great, I got 1.5 from the app store, just checked for 1.6 and it’s not showing, can you just confirm that it’s available from itunes? cheers

  5. TeeShot 1.6 won’t be in the App Store for another week or two. While I did upload it yesterday, it takes Apple a while to review the applications.

  6. Great again Chris! Thanks for the update!

  7. yippie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  8. I am happy to chose a golf scoring app that is being updated frequently and consider users feedback for additional features

  9. Hi Chris

I tried to correct the data of an course who contains wrong data. I changed hole 1 to 18 and now i have 36 holes on that course. I did not found a way to delete the holes 19 to 36. Could you help please

    Rene

  10. Chris,

I upgraded to the 1.5 just before a full week of golf last week. After it crashed 3 times in the first round I just gave up using it for the rest of the week. As I reported before it’s when I am entering shot data that it crashes back to the home screen. It was doing it only about once a round in the previous version. Have you addressed this in 1.6? I was a great fan when this first came out but now it’s almost useless to use the shot tracking feature.

    Tim

  11. Hi Tim,

There are several memory issues fixed in version 1.6 that could cause TeeShot to crash during a round. I’ll respond in email to get some more details to see if your crashes are related.

    -Chris

  12. Chris,

Completely off topic here but is it possible for you to add a rss feed link to your blog so that I can follow any new posts from you instead of checking every day or so? Thanks!!!

BTW, i purchased your practice tee app :)

  13. Hi Eric,

Actually there is one there already. Your address bar probably has an RSS icon or logo in it which links you to the feed. In case it doesn’t the URL is http://blog.teeshotlive.com/feed/

    -Chris

  14. it seems 1.6 is officially up on iTunes!

  15. It also seems that 1.6 removes all data from the previous version, all my courses and rounds are gone.

  16. So will the new version all you to view your stats and trends on the teeshotlive website or is this just a backup feature at this point? Is the ability to view stats on teeshotlive coming in a future release?

    Thanks.

    Kevin

  17. I installed the update directly on my phone today and it crashed immediately upon opening every time until I restarted the phone. Now it seems to be working correctly and all of my data is still on the phone.

  18. Is it possible to see whether or not a course has GPS coordinates loaded before you download it?

  19. Chris,

I’d like to see the phone numbers for the courses become ‘data aware’, or should I say the app make the numbers available to tap and call the club house. I don’t know about anyone else but I find it easier to navigate the courses in TeeShot than find them in the contacts list.

Great App, even though I lost my rounds from the last update I really do like the application, useful.

    Steve

  20. Chris,

I played at river vale in nj last week and the course in your database is completely wrong when compared to the current physical scorecard from river vale. With that said, can you add some kind of date tag of upload or something so we know how dated the current course data in the database is? also, for river vale, shall i just create a course, upload it, and will it overwrite the incorrect data? thanks.

  21. I have just updated to 1.6 with no problems.
I still have my rounds and the uploadfeature works perfectly - also the other bugs is working now.

    I just love this app!!!

    Thank you Chris

  22. I must appologize for my first comment, if I could edit or delete it I would. I forgot that I had wiped my iPhone clean a week ago because of another problem and had lost the data at that point. It was my fault. Sorry for the confusion (red faced)!

    Steve

  23. Hi Everyone,

Yep, TeeShot 1.6 is now live in the iTunes store! It only took 4 days this time which is great progress. This release does not have the ability to view your stats on the website yet. That will probably be version 2.0. You will start to see steps towards that release soon, like the ability to create user accounts on TeeShot Live.

I responded to some of the comments above in email, but for everyone else here’s what I said. You can match the responses up to your comments yourself :)

    * Phone numbers on TeeShot Live and in the iPhone application are already tap aware and tapping them should make the iPhone start the call. Let me know if you see a place where this is not true.
    * I will be adding the ability to see which courses have GPS info on the website soon. The good news is that it does not take an iPhone update to see that.
    * CourseBuilder 1.1 will be up very soon. I’ll have a post on that shortly.

    -Chris

  24. Hi,

How can I update to 1.6 without losing my rounds, now when I update it says… (’could not be installed because of error OxE800002E’), so could I backup it ?, because it seems that itunes doesn’t let me update unless I delete the app and then reinstall it again, but that means losing my data ? and I prefer not to lose my 11 rounds.

    Thank you Chris.

  25. Hi Mike,

I would check with iTunes technical support to see if they can suggest a way to do this. I’m not sure if restoring from the iTunes backup before, or after, will get rid of that iPhone error, but they might know.

    -Chris

  26. Hi Chris, I’m a newer user of Teeshot and have used it for 2 rounds, one with 1.5 and one today with 1.6. First let me congratulate you on a very promising program and your excellent support and availability. As for the usability, the software is loaded with features but the navigation is somewhat cumbersome at least to me. Is there a way when to add a GPS button on the bottom so where ever you are when you hit it it takes you directly to a gps screen with distance to hole or hazard? Then from the scorecard view can the hole numbers be “active” so that you can tap on them and be brought to the gps screen for that hole?
I understand from previous posts that gps is not supposed to be that accurate but I have also used Greenfinder and it seems to be pretty dead on to the course markings and updates quickly so it can be done.
I also was wondering if the data from Practice Tee could be integrated into Teeshot for reference or club suggestion? Even something as simple as a chart so when your 150 out you can check your recent club averages.

    Keep up the great work

  27. For anyone building courses…. When entering the phone number if you use parens to wrap the area code, TeeShot will not place the phone call when tapped. The workaround is to create the number without using the parens. All the courses I built, I used parens around the area code and thats why I couldn’t make calls from TeeShot.

    Steve

  28. Thanks Steve. I am fixing that issue for the next release.

  29. Hi 12golf,

The issue with GPS is less about accuracy than the time it takes to get an accurate reading, If you wait enough time, it can get pretty accurate. I have heard requests from a number of people who don’t do shot by shot scoring, to add some mechanism to get the distance to the green in one of the other scoring screens. I will look at adding that in an upcoming release - probably to the group scoring screen. Tap a button and it just starts giving you the distance to the green until you “turn off” the GPS scanning.

    -Chris

  30. Great update! The group scoring has been made so much easier. I have a question re Stableford points, I don’t know whether it is UK/US differences: inputting a handicap such as 23, when it comes to net score/stableford you will only get one stroke on each hole… meaning that the SI 1-5 where you should get 2 strokes, you are only getting 1. Is this a difference between scoring systems or a bug? Might it be something to do with the slope and course rating?

  31. My Iphone says that all Apps are up to date. I currently have v 1.5 how can I update to 1.6?

    thanks for your help

  32. Chris:

Just completed a round with v1.6. Tracked scores for myself and friend. Combined, we hit 8 fairways. My statistics reflect our combined results, not just my total. It shows 8 with 28.6%. I actually hit 5 out of 14.

  33. Hi Chris, Great app, have updated to the new version with no problems, used it for a couple of rounds and all is great. Looking forward to be able to create my own account etc on the website….. russell

  34. One more thought, did you have any plans to let me make a comment on the conditions when a round happens. I played yesterday and it was very windy, could be cool to make a note about the weather so as if I want to compare rounds I know the conditions. Also would be cool to be able to add some small pics into the course info….. russell

  35. Hey finally got back home and updated, huge thanks for the automatic field advancement on the group scoring page. This completely addresses the issues I had with using this feature on the course!

  36. Hey Chris, I sorted out the problem I had, and it works perfectly now. I entered the slope as 113 and the SS for the course rating. Just in case anyone has the same errors with the stableford.

  37. having an issue with getting the correct distances of shots must be doing somethine wron have tagged the greens nut when i get to the first shot off the tee and chech the distance it can be up to 100 meters out any suggestions

  38. Great update Chris - after four more rounds, this seems to be much smoother to use than the previous version.

For “Ben” - I see over a dozen courses have “GPS” as part of the course name. Until Chris can update the web site, that would help all users.

    For “Mal” - I have noticed the GPS get “stuck” a few times (more in 1.5 / 2.0 than 1.6 / 2.1).

If you suspect this, save the GPS location & click on the blue circle with “>” in it to bring up the map application. It should show where you are on the map (I prefer satellite mode) as well as the location you just stored as a cross check.

I also verify all recorded green locations before uploading by using this method.

Hmm. Just had an idea - is it possible to drop all 18 pins on an overview map to review before upload (or after upload on the web site)? Or drop two pins (current location & current hole) on the map while playing?

    –Mark

  39. problem is that our course is brand new and is not on the google maps yet and when i push the blue chevron button it goes to the update gps again

  40. To Mal,

I noticed that the “blue chevron” is hard to hit on my phone too (perhaps Chris can make it larger). I found that if I press a little closer to the center of the screen, the map will come up reliably.

  41. Yeah, those blue buttons are hard to hit. They are part of the iPhone framework so I can’t tweak them directly but I’ve found that mushing your finger around on it a bit makes it more reliable. If you accidentally tap Update GPS Location, you can always just tap it again to not change the value you had. Just don’t tap Save again.

I’ve been talking with Google folks about how to do things like dropping pins on locations. No answers yet though I might be able to do something if I actually have TeeShot Live do it for you.

    -Chris

  42. Chris,

After updating to 1.6 I sill can’t get through a round without the app crashing 3-4 times while entering shot data. Just keeping score works OK.

I also tried using the GPS function for the first time and can not get any consistent results. It’s not readily apparent on the method to start and stop readings for each shot and I only got 1 shot distance that came close on the first nine holes, so I gave up on using the GPS function. This was one of the reasons that I paid a little premium for your app when it first came out.

After all these issues and losing data between updates I am disappointed that I paid $20 for basically a scorekeeping app. Hope you can fix these issues, but I will be trying some other app for golf.

    Tim

  43. Chris,

Apparently you have blocked me from commenting from my other e-mail address, as I tried multilpe times to give feedback and was getting an error from your site. As soon as I used a different e-mail address the comments got posted.

Seems like a bad way to get honest feedback.

    Tim

  44. Makes feel stupid, but..

I uploaded my home course, went on playing… and was not able to use the GPS feature.

Well I bought it for that. Scoring can be done inside my own private computer iside my head …

May be it’s a problem with the french translation ?

    jpb

  45. Tim,

I responded in email, but I’ll post here too… I am not blocking you, or anyone from the site. Word Press requires that I approve each first message from users to avoid spam and I’ve been a little slow at getting to them each day so sometimes it takes a day or so for them to show up. Sorry for the delay there.

  46. Hi jpb,

The GPS should work regardless of the translation, but perhaps it is a little confusing. There is a fuller description of how it works at http://www.teeshotlive.com/overview1.5#gps. Sorry there is no translation for that page.

  47. “Statistics Issue”
    Hi Chris,

As Ron pointed out, I also noticed that the statistics are mixed up with other players’ stats recorded in my rounds.
All the GIR, Fairway hit, and even handicap were affected (I removed other people’s scores, and I got a different handicap number)

Please confirm about this bug. I really wish statistics should be “MY” statistics, so should not include someone else’s data.

  48. Hi Peter,

There are two places where I’ve found statistics from other players to get mis-counted in TeeShot 1.6 stats. First, the fairways stat was not just counting the current user. Second, if you were playing with one other player and you both only played 9 holes, the handicap calculation would think it was an 18 hole round.

Both of these will be fixed in the next release. I haven’t seen the same issue for GIRs but if you are, please let me know.

    -Chris

  49. Hi Chris,
When I tap the hole number, I see “A propos de ce trou” “about this hole” but no GPS button…

It is NOT what I see in your overview.

Wish I could upload you the image.

    JPB

  50. I will test with artificial rounds, and will provide you more details about the issues in statistics. We never played 9 holes, but I certainly noticed handicap number changed simply after removing other people’s rounds (14 to 12.6). Also I notice # of birdies also included other people’s birdies, so potentially more places which are buggy..
It is good to have capability to upload the rounds for backup, so that I can do testing with artificial rounds. I will be glad to give you feedbacks after my testing..

  51. Chris,

I did a couple of simple testings:
    1.
    Fairway stats include other players.

    2.
My friend recently purchased teeshot, and just had one round with three other players.
It shows weird number of total holes (23, not 18 or 18*4), and some of the other players’ stat were included in GIR, #birdies, #par, etc..
However I cannot reproduce the issue on my phone, so I assume he messed up while entering scores (he mentioned one of the players just disappeared (for his mistake) so re-entered in the middle of rounds)

    3. my handicap number certainly changed after cleaning up other players rounds, but I cannot reproduce it now.

At this moment, I think your fixing plan on stats would be enough.

In general, I am very pleased with teeshot; Thanks!!

  52. Thanks for the info Peter. Let me know if you find any more issues with the stats.

I am currently working in stats and adding a few things for the next release including splitting high/low scores into 9 and 18 hole versions as well as adding sand saves, up & down and some other fun stuff :)

    -Chris

  53. Hi All,

I have updated the course search and course page to indicate whether a course has GPS locations tagged for all of the holes.

    -Chris

  54. Thanks Chris for the additional stuff!
Another other tpye of shot to include in results are:
    Sand
    Water

With those 2 I think it is a pretty complete list.

Could you also sort them so they are in alpha order since the list is now rather long, and would make it easier to find?

    Thanks

  55. Hi Chris,

I am having troubles to get the right Stableford points (EGA) in the 1.6 release. Is this an user error or a bug?

  56. I don’t know of any calculation issues with Stableford scores in 1.6, but you should check the following:

    1) Make sure the course has the right slope and rating configured.
    2) Make sure each player has their handicap entered in the Players section
    3) Make sure you have selected USGA or EGA in settings, based on whichever course handicap system you are using.

If you are still not getting the results you expect, let me know.

    -Chris

  57. I have the right stableford, but netscore isn’t correct when looking at the scorecard.

It is like that the bug regarding the stableford in v. 1,5 hasn’t been corrected regarding this net-score.
