Version 1.7 uploaded to Apple

I have uploaded TeeShot version 1.7 to Apple.  It should be available in the iTunes App Store in just a few days.  In addition to the features mentioned in my previous post,we are happy to announce our first online partnership with USHandicap.com.  TeeShot users who join USHandicap.com can get an official USGA handicap by simply uploading their data from TeeShot after each round. USHandicap.com also lets you compare your rounds with your friends, browse your full round history, access numerous statistics reports and take advantage of discounts and special offers available to USHandicap.com members.  TeeShot users can use coupon code TSS-001-XYUH-0809 to sign up and get 50% off of the regular membership price.

We have also updated our metric support to let you tag a course as being either in meters or yards.  Then, your using setting will translate between the course’s units and your preference setting.  When a round is started from a course that is tagged as meters or yards, the same translation will take place.  Any course or round that does not have an explicit yards or meters value will be assumed to be in whichever units the users’ preference currently indicates.

I’ll do another post when version 1.7 is available for download from the app store and then I’ll see ya on the first tee!

-Chris

Update: (Oct 20 7:00pm PT) Apple has really started to get the hang of the App Store release process.  Only one business day after I uploaded it, TeeShot 1.7 is now available in the store.  You should start seeing it as an update option within the next 24 hours.

  1. Awesome Chris!!! I look forward to it this week. Thanks.

  2. Hi Chris,

I noticed in the documentation for 1.7 (http://www.teeshotlive.com/teeshot/documentation), the 5 icons at the bottom of the app for “Home,” “Courses,” “Statistics,” “Rounds,” and “Current Round” haven’t changed at all. I’m not sure about everyone else, but I don’t necessarily think of Statistics when I see an icon for a green golf bag. And Rounds and Current Round is the same icon (two clubs crossing?) except one is green and one is blue.

I find myself not really having any idea where a particular button is going to take me. I don’t mean to be overly critical, because I love TeeShot, but I just wonder if anyone else feels the same way…I’d love to see some new icons.

    Thanks!

  3. Hi Matt,

I agree actually. I am planning on doing a big visual refresh at some point and updating the icons at that time to make them make a lot more sense. Sadly, I am not a graphic artist, so getting the icons right and in the correct style is a little hit and miss. They are, at least, consistent between the named version on the home page and the icons themselves :)

  4. What information is uploaded to ushandicap.com? is it just the round scores or is it all the info that we enter into teeshot? Also, is there a specific plan we need to sign up for..they have 3 different ones.

  5. You can sign up for any of their plans. When you upload a round, we send information about the course, your strokes, putts and penalties on each hole, whether the drive was in the fairway or not and if it was a green in regulation.

    -Chris

  6. That’s nice to know Chris, thanks. By the way, Apple has apparently stepped up their game, 1.7 is already available…I downloaded it and already emailed myself one of my rounds. Looks awesome!

  7. Chris, i checked out ushandicap.com and i do have to say i have a concern about that outfit. During the sign-up process they ask for part of your driver’s license number as well as birthday. For this type of service why the heck do they need this info, especially the birthday? With privacy and identify concerns these days, how can they be asking for such information for a site that simply tracks golf related info? I’ve given out far less info to sites providing much more in terms of services. for this reason i am hesitant to try them out.

  8. Hi Eric,

I totally understand your concern. I’m not sure why they need that information though I suspect it is what a tournament group might use to look up your handicap if they were trying to verify the number you gave them was yours. If you are just doing the handicap for fun and not for a major tournament tour or anything, I would feel free to enter whatever information in there you want. Just remember whatever you put in there because it might also be the info that is needed if you ever forget your password.

If you have questions for them before you join, it looks like you can contact them at techsupport@isaacgolf.com.

    Thanks,

    -Chris

  9. Hi Chris,

for me it`s the first update;-) How do i make it? Only go to itunes and click the “buy” button and they don`t collect the money than?

    Best regards
    Olaf

  10. Hi Chris,

I just had a look at the new version. Looks good but I would like to see some additional statistics.
You can add a lot of information (like missed left, length of putts etc) but the info is not used in the statistics. Are you intending on adding more statistics to the next release?
E.g. length of putts made, statistics on clubs (e.g. 40% missed left for driver, 50% fairway, 10% right)

    Keep up the good work.

    Immo

  11. Hi Chris,

I originally understood that you would add web pages showing all your statistics in the future. Now you have introduced the upload to USHandicap.com
so it seems you are leaving that stuff to external providers. Is that true or are you planing on adding more web functionality?
If not, would it be possible to support
    http://www.mobilegolfstats.com/ ?
That is a free web side (and I am not linked to it by any way, I don’t even have an account on it (yet)).

    Immo

  12. Hi Immo,

I am always adding more stats in TeeShot. This release has some more and more will continue to come. I have a thought for how to make it pretty easy to see more stats that I will be looking into for an upcoming release.

As for online partners, I will be adding more if they have a mechanism for external devices to upload rounds to their service. I am still planning on adding more abilities to TeeShotLive for round upload and the mailing of scorecards (which can also be viewed on the web) is a first step towards that. I figured that it would also be best to support a wider range of online services and let TeeShotLive grow at its own pace.

USHandicap.com was first because they offer a very nice side-benefit of helping users get an official USGA handicap and they were able to work with me to get the uploads working and tested in a very fast and interactive manner.

If you all have a favorite online site that allows round uploads from external devices, please let me know via email at info at teeshotlive.com or have that web service contact me at the same address.

    -Chris

  13. Chris -

I’m not seeing the device id on the send round screen. I did actually try hitting the upload to US Handicap button before I realized I had to set something up on the US Handicap website (I was already a member).

Please let me know what to do to get the device ID to appear.

    Thanks.

    Kevin

  14. Hi Kevin,

You should see it on the screen where you click upload round. The screen looks like this:

    http://www.teeshotlive.com/image/17_ushandicap.png

    -Chris

  15. Agreed, but it’s not there. Removed teeshot from my phone. Reinstalled from the app store. Restored my rounds from teeshotlive. Went to the send round screen. Still no device id.

    Kevin

  16. Chris, I am a graphic designer and if you need any graphics done i would be more than willing to help make this app better.

  17. Chris, BIG BIG issues with 1.7.

Used it for 2 rounds of golf now, and both times, random scores are occuring for 1 or 2 of the 4 players.

EG. Hole 3 today we finished, hit the arrow for the next hole to enter the scores, and the score from hole 3 for 1 of the players was already there. When I moved forward more holes, EVERY hole had the same score beside that player.

I ended up not being able to use it for that round.

This afternoon, played again, and on hole 16 looked, and all the scores were out of whack. When I went back a few holes, 2 of the players scores were now all identical for the last 4 holes, and their score was already inserted for the next 2 holes.

Could get it to work, and we lost all all scoring, as we couldnt remember 5 holes back what some people got.

Never had this issue before 1.7, and I use it a lot. Not only can I not use the program, but I looked like an idiot with Clients this afternoon, losing their scores from my iPhone and Teeshotlive.

    Thanks, Loren

  18. Hi Loren,

Sorry about the problem you had with TeeShot. This is an issue that has come up with iPhone OS 2.1 and I’ve been trying to get it to reproduce here but I haven’t been able to yet. If you see it, you can just tap the big button on the phone and then go back into the application and it will be ok again. It seems to happen when the player who is currently being scored is scrolled off the screen when you hit the button to go to the next hole. Once it starts, it won’t seem to go away (the reason is that the view from the previous hole is sitting on top of the one for this hole - it is a very strange issue).

I am definitely looking hard to figure out what I can do to detect and fix this issue.

Since I know the issue happens when clicking next while editing, I might just disable the next/previous buttons on group scoring while the keyboard is up until I know I have a solution for this. I will look into that today.

    -Chris

  19. Much appreciated. Weird, I have never seen this happen, and I use it a lot. Then it happens twice within 24 hours.

Thanks for the quick response. Love the program, other than it feels a little fiddly to add players to a game, and entering scores each holes doesnt feel as intuitive as Intelligolf was, but a great program. Really enjoy using it. Well done.

  20. The items in the group scoring page are larger now to make room for the new options, so that probably makes it more likely to happen. The change I described above should resolve it, but it will require you tap done on the keyboard before hitting the next or previous arrows.

    -Chris

  21. Chris

    Adding players from contacts :
-the “me” player does not take the picture + email address as defined in my contacts
-added players from contacts : does not include the e-mail address as well

Can you add these in the next release ?

    thx

    Patrick

  22. Hi Chris,
Congrats. on a great application - I wish my golf was as good!
I am having a problem with the new e-mail scorecard function. The documentation says the default is to email all the players on the round, but it seems to just enter my own e-mail address. How does one ensure the scorecard goes to all the round players?
Also, it would be nice if the email addresses were imported from address book rather than having to type them in.

  23. Hi Darach,

When we set up the to list, we just include the email addresses that are configured for each user. I’ll take a look to make sure there aren’t any issues here. Importing from the address book is on my list of things to do, I just didn’t get to it in 1.7 :)

    -Chris

  24. Patrick,

The me player will grab the picture if you add them from the address book, but if the user’s name was typed in then it won’t. If you already have your me player set, just change their name to be blank (you will only see (me) in the name) then tap it again and you will be able to choose your card in the address book. It should set remember the AB record at that point and show the picture from it.

The next version will also import the first email address.

    -Chris

  25. Well, I uploaded a couple rounds to US Handicap a couple days ago and they have yet to show up. I’ve got an email in to US Handicap to see if they have any idea why the rounds aren’t posting.

    Kevin

  26. Chris, since we are amateures, I think it would make more sense on the scorecard to only mark par and under and not mark above par. Or another alternative is to not mark bogey’s and mark everything else. Depending on what every one else thinks, my 1st choice would be to mark par and under that way the good holes standout. The way it is now I have to many marks on the scorecard to make any sense of it.

  27. Hi John,

One thought I had while adding the scorecard marking was to be able to do it on net scores, not just gross scores. For us higher handicappers, it is nice to get the encouragement of some nice green marks when you play a hole well within your handicap range. This could be an option under settings.

    Thoughts?

    -Chris

  28. Sounds like a good option for users to decide in the settings.

  29. I would agree with the availability of the options, 1 the way you have it, and 2 only highlight scroes of par or lower that way us high hadicappers don’t have all those marks for the bogeys and above.

    Great work on 1.7

  30. Kevin, i have the same problem, uploaded rounds to ushandicap via teeshot and they don’t show up on the site. also the club i play at underwent a name change quite a long time ago and ushandicap still reflects the old club name. i have sent them an email a few days back but have yet to hear from them. not a good sign, seems like these guys aren’t very responsive at all

maybe chris can relay the problems over to them so they can get on it

  31. Hi Chris,

in the stats i can see the number of putts. Is it possible to see the average per hole in percent analog the rairway hits?

    Olaf

  32. Chris,
I also paid for UShandicap membership and tried to upload my rounds, but will not post to their website. Is their a waiting period or a upload problem?

    Thanks’
    Wesmel75

  33. I will definitely follow up with the USHandicap folks about the delays in rounds showing up on their site. They say it can take up to 24 hours for the rounds to be processed but it sounds like it is sometimes taking longer.

I will take a look at average putts per hole. It seems like a pretty simple statistic to add :)

    -Chris

  34. I just heard back from the USHandicap.com folks. It looks like they had a problem with the code that processes the uploaded rounds for a few days but it is working again and currently processing the rounds you have uploaded. They should be visible within the next hour or so.

    -Chris

  35. Chris,

Thanks for your help with ushandicap. I can confirm, the 3 rounds that i’ve uploaded are showing on their site now. thanks again!!!

    Eric

  36. Chris,

Can you see if you can do some kind of integraton with oobgolf.com? Thanks.

  37. Looks like US Handicap got things working (although I ended up with a round posted twice on my handicap calc since I didn’t think the upload was working at first. Unfortunately it wasn’t a great round).

    Kevin

  38. Hi Kevin,

I’m pretty sure you can delete rounds on USHandicap.com if one shows up twice.

    -Chris

  39. Hello Chris,

I am a big fan of the product. I have a question based on curiosity. Rroducts like Greenfinder and ViewT G claim their gps is very accurate and the user reviews are postive. I have the original Iphone looking to upgrade to the gps 3g iphone. What is the accuracy of the gps for teeshot and how would it compare to the other products?

Keep up the good work I am very happy with Tee Shot

  40. The accuracy is the same across all of the products and in the end the reading you get in TeeShot is pretty accurate. The challenge, still, is the amount of time it takes to get that accurate reading. I still find it takes upwards of 20 seconds to get a “golf accurate” reading but it is a little better than in the 2.0 version of the phone so perhaps this will continue to improve.

    -Chris

  41. 18 handicap’s questions does raise another question. i have a few gps related apps for my 3g and i’ve seen a few updates for some of my apps and even gps related apps that i don’t have where the developer claims “improved gps accuracy” or “improved time to gps lock”. Are they bullshitting or can they really do things in the code to improve gps accuracy or speed?

  42. Someone above (Eric I believe), asked about integration with oobgolf. I don’t know anything about programming/devlopment, but I this might/might not be useful…

    http://www.oobgolf.com/api/

  43. Shhh… don’t tell anyone, but version 1.7.1 will support uploading to OOBGolf as well.

    :)

    -Chris

  44. that sounds cool! i hadnt heard of oobgolf before, but i checked it out, and im now signed up waiting for 1.7.1 :D

  45. Good job Chris, what else for the 1.7.1 ?.
