TeeShot 1.7.1

TeeShot 1.7.1 is on coming soon. I just uploaded it to the iTunes store which usually means it will be available in the next couple of days.

What’s new?  Well it isn’t a huge release but there are some nice improvements in version 1.7.1.

  • Upload rounds to oobgolf.com - Users have been asking for this for a while and I am really happy to announce it is here.  Thanks too the oobgolf folks for adding some new APIs to make this work.
  • Users with GPS enabled iPhones can now see the distance to the green for any courses that have beeb GPS tagged.  While this was possible in earlier versions for shot by shot tracking, it is now also available in the group scoring page and the hole scoring page.  When the course has the coordinates for the green, you will see a new option at the bottom.  Tap the little target button and it will give you the distance.
  • Lots of stability improvements. Some people were getting crashes in shot by shot scoring and I think those are all fixed now.  The group scoring page would sometimes have a problem where it would show a score from a previous hole.  That is fixed now too, but you need to dismiss the keyboard with the Done button before going to the next hole
  • Slope, rating and units are now editable for rounds.  Just go into edit mode to be able to change them.  You need to go to edit mode to change units on courses now too.
  • Screen rotation is disabled.  I meant to turn it off before 1.7 and forgot… oops! While it was interesting, it wasn’t terribly useful so I am going back to portrait only for now.

As always, your feedback is welcome so let us know what you think!

While it is getting a bit cold to play much right now, I still hope to see ya on the first tee!

-Chris

Nov 13, 2008 UPDATE: 1.7.1 has been marked Ready for Sale so it should start showing up in iTunes over the next 24 hours.  Make sure you back up your data to TeeShot Live before you install the update.

  1. Hi Chris, I’m a user of oobgolf so that is great.

Is that easy to tag a course ?
Any instruction on how to do it ?

    Thank you again.

  2. yay, oob!

  3. I just want to say, THANK YOU! I’ve been watching the updates to this app since it’s day one release, and have not purchased it yet. I can say that today, I will. I’ve been an oobgolf user and have been wanting an iphone app that does a good job with the API’s, and your competitor product Fore! which does that, seems to be junkware. Now, not only will I be purchasing this app, but I will be upgrading to the 3G for GPS functions. Thank you!

  4. > Is that easy to tag a course ?
Yes. I’ve done all the courses I play on a regular basis (about half a dozen).

    > Any instruction on how to do it ?
The 1.5 preview shows the screens to save the green location as an example.

  5. update seems to be taking a while. i guess apple is back to their old “slow” ways in terms of approving updates

  6. Hi Mike,

There are directions for geo-tagging a course with CourseBuilder on the CourseBuilder page of the website: http://www.teeshotlive.com/coursebuilder

    -Chris

  7. Is there a way to download courses into coursebuilder so that i can simply add gps coordinates? it seems like i will have to recreate the whole course from scratch just to add gps coordinates i scraped off google maps. is this correct?

  8. Hi Eric,

If CourseBuilder is installed on your computer, choosing Download this course from TeeShotLive should download and open the course in CourseBuilder.

    -Chris

  9. Cool, thanks. I just tagged my first course. I just hope the google maps method is accurate. By the way, any way of checking on the iphone itself if the re-downloaded course now has gps coordinates set? thanks.

  10. Hi Eric,

Yes, you can go into the course and look at each hole. If it says “Update location” and has an arrow (>) next to it then there is a location for that hole. Tapping the arrow will show you that location in Google Maps.

    -Chris

  11. I wonder what’s holding up the update. I just had a different app updated twice this week!!!

  12. I got a note back this morning with a complaint from Apple about TeeShot using the same icon for preferences that they use in the iPhone. It was my understanding that this was expected and/or encouraged but I am emailing them back about it.

This is particularly strange given that this icon has been there for 4 releases and there were no issues previously. Hopefully we can get this worked out quickly.

    -Chris

  13. that is ridiculous!! i agree that the icon for “settings” should be the same so you dont have to learn new stupid icons

  14. I was really looking forward to this update since I just updated my local course with gps coordinates and i wanted to use the iphone to see range to the hole without dealing with the hassles of getting into the shot by shot tracking. arghhhhh

  15. Forgot to mention, i played today at the local course and could have used that functionality

  16. Yeah, real shame.

I’ve been using this for a couple of months and and I absolutely love it and was really looking forward to the oob upload feature.

Any idea when we are likely to see 1.71 appear ?

    Keep up the great work.

  17. Any word from apple? I plan on playing again later this week and would really love this update….

  18. Chris, any further updates on the situation? Thanks

  19. I have submitted 1.7.1 again to Apple so we’ll see what they say next :)

    -Chris

  20. As a birthday gift for my father, no doubt, Apple has marked TeeShot 1.7.1 as ready for sale so the updates should start being available within the next 24 hours.

    Happy Birthday Dad :)

    -Chris

  21. did you have to end up changing the settings icon then?

  22. just updated to 1.7.1!

  23. Chris, nice job!!! The upload to oobgolf works fabulously.

  24. Just a suggestion Chris, but in the new Distance to Green feature in the group scoring screen, can you dispay the GPS accuracy number like you do in the shot by shot details screen so we have some indication as to whether the GPS lock is a good one or bad one? thanks!!!

  25. Hi Eric,

Yep, I can look at that. Perhaps I will try for a more subtle way of indicating how good the data is (orange icon = low accuracy, yellow icon = medium accuracy, green icon = high accuracy).

    -Chris

  26. Sounds great. I’m going to give this new feature a test drive at the course tomorrow :) can’t hardly wait

  27. Chris, is the upload to ushandicap.com working with the new version? Uploaded today’s round but still not showing up. oobgolf.com upload works however.

  28. Feedback on the new version:

[1] I am having problems with ushandicap.com as well - sent a notice to their tech support and Chris separately with details.

[2] I had a crash free round for the first time. Before - it would almost always crash the first time on the fourth hole and occasionally on later holes. Woo Hoo!

[3] A side note - I received my external battery pack (The Mophie “Juice Pack 3G”) and did a round with it (recording all shots w/ GPS on all drives & first putt). With cold conditions (near freezing at start - up to 50 F four hours later when I finished) - the external battery use was less than 50% of a full charge. I am not sure that contributed to [2] but I noticed the iPhone thinks it is always plugged in so that may affect power management.

Will have a round tomorrow as well - will provide a follow up message after that round.

  29. Chris, i noticed when i played my round on Friday, that after the first two holes, the gps distance to all of the subsequent holes for the course (as i had marked it via the google satellite maps method) was way way off to the tune of thousands of yards. It was working fine for the first 2 holes. I haven’t double checked all of the gps coordinates for the holes but a randome sampling and they looked fine so i wonder if you have a bug in your program where after x number of times of using this feature, it basically doesn’t work anymore and simply displays junk data.

  30. I like the oobgolf-part of version 1.7.1…
Perhaps you could add the possibility of syncing thru the round so that the app supports live-scoring as well…

Look at the smartscorecard… It is possible…

    Love your app…
Looking forward to the next update.

  31. Played again today. The app ran fine (not sure what Eric’s problem was - I didn’t have any GPS problems) except for the upload to USHandicap.com after completing the round. TeeShot seems to indicate the upload was complete but it doesn’t appear on USHandicap (yesterday’s isn’t there either).

  32. Mark, did you try the new gps functionality? the one that measures distance to the green from current location for marked courses? not the other gps functionality that simply measured distances for individual shots?

maybe it’s possible i just had bad gps locks, hence that’s why i think it’s important for chris to add some kind of indicator as to the accuracy of the gps lock

  33. Hi Eric,

Just like in the shot by shot scoring mode, the iPhone can take up to 30 seconds to give you an accurate reading. The first response will be from the last location that it knew about and then, as it figures out your location, it will start responding with more updated locations. Make sure you keep looking long enough for it to give you an accurate reading. In the future, I will update the icons to show you, roughly, how close the iPhone thinks it is, though those values are still often wrong with the first few locations it hands us.

    Hope this helps.

    -Chris

  34. The ushandicap.com round upload sometimes takes a couple of days to get posted to their site. oobgolf seems to be much more real time.

As for real time following on oobgolf, I think that re-uploading the round to oobgolf will just update it so you could update as often as you want during a round. Their API for doing hole by hole uploads assume we are using their course information, which we are not but being able to upload your round again gets you most of that benefit.

    -Chris

  35. TeeShot gives a failure when trying to upload during a round.
I tried to update after 3 holes, but the app tells me, that it is missing information of hole no 4.

  36. Ah ok. That error is actually coming from oobgolf. I’ll take a look at maybe doing the hole by hole when the round isn’t finished but I’m not sure that they support that when we’re not using their course database.

  37. Hi,

I just tried out oobgolf with TeeShot it worked fine but it would be good if TeeShot could upload the course data as well. I don’t want to enter the course information twice! What information is actually send to oobgolf? Is all the shot-by-shot data send to oobgolf?

  38. The people over at ushandicap.com are idiots. they finally responded to an email of mine, primarily one letting them know that the upload from teeshot isn’t working. in my email to them i specifically mentioned that i tried to upload a round from Friday and i said it has been over 3 days and still nothing is showing on their site. I finally got a response, however their response was that they wanted the exact date, of the upload i assume. Like they couldn’t figure out the date from my email that spcifically said Friday, 3 days ago? Seems like instead of looking into the problem, they just decided to initiate delaying tactics. I know it only cost $10 but I do not recomment anyone sign up for ushandicap.com. By the way, i sent them an email a month ago on a different issue, and they never even bothered responding to that one. unbelievable.

Not to mention……..the upload is still not working for a round that was uploaded last Friday. I know this is not an issue with teeshot but with ushandicap.com.

  39. Just download teeshot, seems to be perfect, and just uploade me first course with GPS data, much better to use google earth program to get the GPS data :-) just to let you know.., but I can`t download the course I have just uploaded ??

  40. Chris, question…..

I wound up deleting my last round off of oobgolf.com through their site and tried to re-upload the round via teeshot. the upload isn’t posting. Just wondering if you happen to know if the round is deleted from their site, you can’t repost the same round back to their site for display via teeshot? thanks

  41. Hi Eric,

I think the issue is that I hold on to the round id that oobgolf gives me back so you could update the round later and when you upload it again, they don’t find the original round. I have a mail thread going with the oobgolf guys about this right now so hopefully we can get that fixed up soon.

    -Chris

  42. Thanks Chris, that’s kind of what I figured. It makes sense for you to hold onto the round id for later updates if necessary. Hopefully it can be fixed. Until then, is there any possibility of you clearing out this id from my latest round in your server so when i re-submit it, it will look like a new round to oobgolf and get posted? I promise not to delete roundsagain from oobgolf’s site until this issue is resolved. Thanks.

  43. Chris, the net scores from teeshot do not match the nets scores from oobgolf for all of my uploaded rounds. According to oobgolf support, their method of calculation is correct and they looked at my rounds and said the net score calcs were correct. teeshot has my net scores about 10 strokes higher than oobgolf’s……for example, i had my best round of 99 (i’m not that great!!!) and teeshot has my net score at 72 where oobgolf has it at 62. Can you check to see if you find any issues with the way you are calculating net scores? Thanks.

  44. Hi Chris, I have a problem uploading a course, when I upload it says ( the course was uploaded successfully) but it is not on the courses page, can not find it, NAME-Coral, COUNTRY-Mexico.

    Thank you Chris.

  45. Hi Chris,

used group scoring for the first time yesterday (normally I use shot-by-shot) and I got the same problem someone reported for the 1.7 version. My last score was suddenly appearing for every hole. It went away when I exited the app and started it again. Luckily a friend recorded the scores as well so I could fix the scores but I would say that that bug makes group scoring basically unusable until it is fixed (it is too easy to miss it at first and then you end up with a wrong score).

Coming back to the course data issue (see my last post). OOBgolf only has a few courses in my neck of the woods (South East England or England in general) so all my rounds recorded with TeeShot and uploaded to oobgolf have no course associated with it. That means oobgolf doesn’t know whether it was a par or triple bogey. It doesn’t know what GIR is for a particular hole etc.
Can’t OOBgolf and TeeShot share course data?

Don’t get me wrong. My nagging is meant to be constructive. I like TeeShot that’s why I want it to improve.
    Regards

    Immo

  46. Hi Immo,

Were you running iPhone 2.2 or 2.1 for that round? I looked like that issue was fixed in 1.7.1 but 2.2 might have changed something there.

As for course information, oobgolf has their own database of courses which we can’t access (they won’t let us store them on our site). I offered to upload more information in the round so it could all be there but since their system is designed to work with their own course descriptions, they wanted to have you enter the course into their system. The good news is that once the course is added there, you don’t need to do the mapping anymore and each subsequent upload will use the right course.

    -Chris

  47. Not sure if this is the place to post this or not… In my statistics, if I have played nine holes at an 18 hole golf course, the nine hole score doesn’t show up (best/worst) in the statistics…. Proably not that important though.

    Great app otherwise, thanks

  48. Chris,

I created 1 set of tees for a course I played yesterday, what is the fastest/easiest way to enter the remaining tees?

Can I enter it into coursebuilder and upload to teeshot and then to iphone or would that cause I problem?

  49. Genreal question about iphone and using teeshot. I generally ride in a cart, has anyone found a device for the cart to hold the iphone?

    Thanks

  50. John,

If you already have the course in TeeShot, you can upload it to TeeShot Live and then download, edit, and re-upload it with CourseBuilder.

If you haven’t played there yet, then starting from CourseBuilder is fine too.

    -Chris

  51. Thanks for the suggestion Chris. Since I had played and only created the 1 set of tees, I wanted to make sure what was the safest way to get what I have and add the other tees to teeshot.

I was also having a lot of difficulty with the touch screen in group scoring to go and enter there scores/putts etc.. I don’t seem to have any issues with other apps and the touch screen. So any thoughts?
