Damn it. I thought there was a new update!
Dying waiting!

Me too
But I’ve noticed something else yesterday (apart from not being able to send the scorecard).
My handicap is 16.5 but Teeshot used a handicap of 16 for my round. It should have rounded it up to 17 (I am using EGA handicap setting).

Coming back to the handicap issue. I’ve noticed that Teeshot live used a handicap of 14 for my friend who is playing off 15. Is that somehow related to the fact that the course has a SSI of 71 (Par 72)?

Your course handicap (which is what you play to in a round) is calculated based on your personal handicap and the slope rating. In Europe, the course handicap also takes into account the course rating and the par of the course. This is why you will see some difference between your entered handicap and your course handicap. This also translates into your stableford scores since we use your net score for each hole to calculate your stableford score.

I’ve never played in a competition where a course handicap was used to calculate your stableford score. In our club everyone just plays off their normal handicap. Same in the society I play in.

I think I now know where the confusion is coming from. Our handicap system in England (CONGU) is different then that of the rest of Europe. Would it be possible to support CONGU as well? It is simpler then the EGA one I believe.

CONGU is actually very hard to do in software and get the same value that your official handicap would display. It requires that you enter every single official round you’ve ever played since each round’s impact is based on the previously played rounds in a relative way. This means that if you have been tracking your course at a CONGU course for several years and started using TeeShot today, you would either need to enter all of those rounds into the phone, or your handicap would never quite match your official handicap from CONGU.
There are a number of sites on the internet that describe the complexities of this and their impact on scoring and compatition. http://www.popeofslope.com/scotland/usscothandicaps.html does a good job (though it is pretty long and a bit biased against CONGU – the math is correct).
One thing we could look at is letting you enter your CONGU handicap for each round and then do the scoring based on that. If that sounds useful, I’ll add it to the request list.

Hi Chris,
I’ve previously asked about supporting Australain handicaps, buy it’s not the easiest system. Well, the AGU has decided to pursue the USGA handicap and slope system. As a result, Teeshot will now have more significance in Australia!
By: Watty on May 31, 2009

That is great news.
The Australian system and the CONGU are closely related.

Hi Chris,
Your suggestion to enter the handicap by hand sounds good. Every time your handicap changes you just update it in Teeshotlive. It would however be great to have both options (Use specified CONGU handicap or use handicap calculated by Teeshot).

Hi Alvaro,
Unfortunately, all I can say at the moment is “soon”. I’ll definitely post as soon as everything is ready to go.

Dear Chris,
I also noted some differences with my handicap.
I use EGA.
Before playing my last round I had a EGA Exact Hcp of 24.3.
With the 18 hole course par 72, SR 121 and CR 69.1 that should give me an EGA Playing Hcp of 23 (calc.: 24.3 * 121/113 + 69.1 – 72 = 22.9 –> 23)
TeeShot however gave me a course hcp of 22, resulting in a Stableford score of 37 whereas with the playing hcp of 23 I would have gotten 38 Stableford points.
On the basis of 38 Stableford points my EGA Exact Hcp should have gone down by 0.8 (2 points above buffer in cat 4 = 2*0.4) to 23.5.
With the playing hcp of 22 TeeShot calculated for the course, I ended only 1 above buffer which should have resulted in a 24.3 – 0.4 = 23.9 EGA exact hcp. However, under Statistics TeeShot indicates my hcp as being 25…
Could you give a bit more background on the mechanism behind the automatic calculation of the EGA hcp?
Is there possibly something I did wrong?
(I inputted the 24.3 under (me) under players before the round [and in a prior TeeShot session].)
Keep the good work up and really looking forward to version 2.0!
Cheers,
Thierry

Just signed up for myscorecard.com. It’s a nice site for handicap tracking and provides some nice graphs for analyzing your stats. Even compares your stats to others with the same handicap. It would be great in a future update to teeshot if uploads to myscorecard.com were included. Thanks.

Hey Chris,
With the release of the new 3GS with built in compass, do you expect that the accuracy of the GPS will be even better for golfers?
Cheers,
Watty
PS….Is the new version far away? I’m sort of sick of using competitors product!

Hey Chris,
Love the program and look forward to the update. I had two simple questions, how many rounds does one need to play before the statistics update the handicap? I have 7 rounds now and it keeps saying ‘not enough rounds’.
Also, will it be possible in future versions to show accumulated statistics for playing partners as well?
Thanks!
Kasper.

I don’t think the compass will help much with GPS accuracy but it is possible that the faster processor will. I’m looking forward to trying it out!

Hi Kasper,
It takes at least six 18 hole rounds to get a preliminary handicap and twenty 18 hole rounds to do the official calculation.
We will be doing more with online calculations and statistics for all players coming soon. Stay tuned for an announcement related to that

When is the release going to be? I’ve seen “soon” for over a month. I know it’s a lot of work and you’re doing your best but can we have a timeframe? Are we talking days? Weeks? Months? If you can give an estimate I think everyone will stop asking (at least for the time period you give).
Thanks and keep up the great work…I feel like a kid waiting for Christmas morning!

Hi Marcus,
Sorry I can’t be more specific on the release date. It is a bit out of my control at the moment for reasons that will be clear soon
I believe we are trying to upload the app to Apple within the next week and I’ll definitely post as soon as it happens.

With the recent iPhone OS 3.0 I do seem to have a few crashes using TeeShot 1.7.4, but reckon the new version 2.0 will prove to be stable.
Very excited (to speak with Marcus: like a kid waiting for Christmas morning) about the upcoming new features!
Keep the good work up!
Cheers,
Thierry

Yes, I noticed one of those this weekend when playing a round running 1.7.4 on iPhone 3.0. We’ll make sure those are fixed in the 2.0 release.

Posted June 17 -”I believe we are trying to upload the app to Apple within the next week and I’ll definitely post as soon as it happens.”
Any updates? Has the app be submitted to Apple? Would be nice to play a July 4th round with Teeshot 2.0.

See, this is where I get in trouble with throwing out a specific date. Nope, it hasn’t been sent to Apple yet though I’m hoping that is very soon. You will soon see that the 2.0 release has gotten a lot bigger and while it has taken much longer than I had hoped, I think you will really like what you see as soon as it is out.
Hopefully, I will be able to be much less cryptic in the next few days.

Not sure if you have changed this, but I had a problem yesterday. Somehow putting the phone into my pocket activated the settings -> download data from internet. Lost about a month of recorded rounds plus a new par-3 course I had not yet uploaded.
You may want to make “upload data to internet” easier” (say on the front page, or as an option at the start of each round) and make downloading more difficult (perhaps a touch & then sliding motion – like the iphone on motion).
Thanks.

Hi Mark, sorry to hear that. Download does require confirmation but pocket tapping is pocket tapping…
It is a great suggestion to have an option for an automatic backup after each round or something. I’ll add that to the request list.

We would love to be able to upload rounds to ghin.com but they currently don’t let any 3rd parties post to their site. I hope they change that soon because it would be a a great connection!

I noticed the new “US Handicap” web site – no apparent way to add devices such as the iPhone w/ Tee Shot to upload scores. Does this still work or do we have another closed site (like GHIN) for handicaps?
Thanks.

Hi Mark,
Hmm, I can’t find how to link TeeShot to USHandicap on their site any more either. I’ve sent an email to them and I’ll let you know what I find. I do still see some uploads happening but I’m not sure what is happening on the USHandicap.com side.

Chris,
Summer is half over any word on a release date for 2.0? I like your software but the delays after delays is starting to wear on my patience. Please provide an update on the situation other than its close to release.

I totally understand the frustration with the delay in getting 2.0 out. I’m working on getting the details so we can post about the bigger changes that are coming and that will explain the delay as well as all of the cool stuff you get once it is released.
On the plus side, there are a bunch more people involved now and that is going to make for some amazing new capabilities from TeeShot both in 2.0 and beyond. The down side is there is a lot more involved in getting this release out than when I first posted what is new a few months ago, though rest assured that all of those new features, plus more, are in the 2.0 release.
I appreciate everyone’s patience and I hope you will all be as excited as I am to see and use what we’re finishing up here.

I’m told there is very positive news this week though to prevent a repeat of 1.7.3 (where Apple rejected the update 7 times and it took waaay too long for it to show up in the store) I’m going to just say that it is out of my hands

Hi Chris,
what about CourseBuilder. You said a while ago that a new version of that (hopefully for the Mac as well) will come out with Teeshot 2.0 which makes it easier to add GPS co-ordinates for your course. Is the update for CourseBuilder coming soon?
