Big Changes with Tee Shot Live

Over the past few months, I’ve been hinting that there were some other new things coming for Tee Shot but we couldn’t quite tell you about it yet.  Well, today is the day when I can finally spill the beans!  I am pleased to announce that Tee Shot has been acquired by EA SPORTS and Tee Shot Live will be the first version released by EA. This is a great opportunity for Tee Shot to be able to really go to the next level and you will see the beginning of those improvements with Tee Shot Live.

While the iPhone application has all of the new features we mentioned in the earlier posts on Tee Shot Live, the big news will be the new TeeShotLive.ea.com website.  The new website lets you upload your rounds, store and share statistics and scorecards, organize custom groups and events, create virtual tournaments and upload, review and compare various equipment and gear with your friends and the community.   Now that we have this version out, you will start to see a lot more great new features coming from EA SPORTS.

We are all done migrating all of the courses and data backups to the new service and making sure that Tee Shot users are correctly migrated to the new application which will come from EA SPORTS.  Tee Shot Live has been released in the Apple iTunes store and you can now get the new version on your iPhone or in iTunes. TeeShotLive.ea.com is now also open and you just need to go create a free account there so you can upload your rounds, search for courses and connect with your golfing buddies online.

Since Tee Shot Live is now being delivered through EA SPORTS, it is technically a new application so you will not see the update automatically like you have with previous versions.  A large amount of the recent delay was spent working with Apple on ways to migrate existing users of TeeShot over so that the upgrade would be automatic and free, but in the end, Apple was unable to do this so the upgrade will take a little bit of work on your part.  Just go to the new app in the iTunes store and you can download it after paying for the new version.  For a short time after launch, EA is setting the price at just $0.99 so it is a very inexpensive upgrade.  We did try a lot of different options with Apple to make this transition simpler and free, but in the end, we were unable to make that happen. On the plus side, there is a lot of great new functionality in the new application for only 99 cents and you can do a restore in the new application and it will download your most recent backup from the old version of TeeShot.  We have also copied all of the courses over to the new website.

One other new feature that we have not yet shown is the new course search feature in Tee Shot Live.  Rather than going to the website to search for courses, you can now search right in the application.  Just enter part of the name or location of the course and you can choose from any of the found courses right in the application.  TeeShotLive does not have the ability to upload to oobGolf or to USHandicap.com but I think you will find that TeeShotLive.ea.com has most of the features that those services have and there will be more coming soon.

I am very excited about these changes and the opportunity they will create for the whole Tee Shot community. Here are some screenshots of the updated iPhone application and the new website so you can take a look before you download.

Finally, with this release, EA SPORTS will be taking over support for the product.  You will be able to stay in contact with them through the TeeShotLive.ea.com website and you can send support or feedback requests to teeshotlive@ea.com.  I want to thank everyone for their feedback and contributions since TeeShot was released.  The community support has been wonderful and I’m looking forward to seeing it continue to grow with the new web site.

Thanks to everyone and I’ll see you on the first tee!

-Chris

  1. First comment! :)

Apple released an earlier build than expected this morning so we turned it off while we get the improved version posted. As soon as that version is live, teeshotlive.ea.com will be opened.

    -Chris

    • Please tell me this is going to be a matter of hours and not days.

  2. Chris, is this it for you? You riding off into the sunset? Are you going to be closing this blog? Is there any plans to support oobgolf and UShandicap.com in the future?

  3. Can other people who do not use teeshot use the teeshot website?

  4. Chris.
Is the app going to able today or when?

  5. How do you register at the TeeShotLive.ea.com website? When I click on the link is asks for a username/password??
I also searched the iTunes store for Teeshot and it just comes up with the old software that is no longer available??

    • Same question from me. I experience the exact same thing. And I get even more worried by Chris’ post 8:52 which indicates that the version I bought some 6-8 hours ago is an unfinished one. How do I get hold of the “improved version”?
Honestly, we have waited for ages, and everything is being messed up today.

  6. c

  7. I was one of the early ones to download the new teeshot live version. Although I’ve seen some improvements in entering score details I’ve also noticed a few bugs.
Adding players from the address book doesn’t work.
It crashed several times on me so far. The webservice is down and although I was able to set up an account I can’t log in. I hope they haven’t lost the account information as there doesn’t seem to be a way to change the account info in the application.

I don’t like it that they removed oobgolf. Will have to see whether the ea website is better.
I will give teeshot another chance. Maybe ea will put some resources in it to fix the stuff and come up with something really good. But at the moment I am disapointed!

  8. Had to return to say I told you so. Charging for the update of what i suppose to be effectively what the original app (and your purchase) was for. A little like purchasing a cherry topped cake only to be told you will receive the cherry at a latter date. Once the Cherry is available they force you to pay extra for it.

Oh and this now is apparantly the wrong version updated?!?!? So we are told it is an earlier version.

And as for the Apps use of the courses.

Teeshot was such a great little app that promised so much. I think I speak for most when i say we was all waiting for an update that GPS mapping completed the App. That I believe was the plan (after speaking to Chris directly via email in the past) and that is why I made the purchase. We also needed an improved database of courses. Something I did my best to improve personally also.

But now this, EA has taken over, website is not up, no courses, no migration of stats, charging you extra for an update which is looped hole around apples regulations by listing the app as a different one to the original?!?!? The customer pays… the customer expects… This is a not service. It’s profit oriented entirely now. In for a penny out for a pound.

That is my view. One I am sure will be delete from this blog comment section anyway.

  9. Immo, those are the types of fixes that are in the “real” final version. Since you have the EA version now, it should just show you the updated version when it shows up just like other apps do.

    • Care to answer some of the other questions asked?

      • Sure, I’ll answer them the best that I can. Other questions should be sent to teeshotlive@ea.com.

The website will be open to users who do not have TeeShotLive on the iPhone.

The blog (and the teeshotlive.com website) will be around for a little while, but EA will have their own support mechanisms and future updates will be posted there, not here.

I don’t know when the updated app will be available, it is not yet approved by Apple though we were told it would be today. The website will open when that app version is posted. Once the website is open, you will be able to register and use it without that login dialog.

It looks like USHandicap stopped supporting external hardware devices a few weeks ago and they haven’t responded to any emails so I don’t see that coming back. As for oobgolf, I don’t know of any plans but that is up to the EA team. I would recommend taking a look at their site and providing feedback for what you’d like to see at teeshotlive@ea.com.

As for me, I am still helping the team out with for a while more but they have been handling all of the coding for the last several months. There are many more people working on TeeShotLive now than there were on TeeShot (which was just me) so I think you will see much more coming. The tough part was getting through this first release. It should be much easier to do more updates more quickly moving forward.

        -Chris

      • Thanks

  10. Is oobgolf support really removed? If so, I am out.

  11. Looks like they are getting ready to post the app, the main page is unaccessible now. Also the price has jumped to $9.99 :S.

  12. Yawn… It’s still all a bit mysterious. Looking for the USP which justifies my hanging on for this update instead of trying out one of the other options. Perhaps TeeshotLive will allow it to hold the Google Map of the course offline, for those courses, of which there are many, which are out of mobile data access range. It’s anyone’s guess…

  13. I started using oobgolf only because of teeshot and now i have all my friends on it…It is a little disappointing that the support for that is gone. It does seem like the new website will have all of oobgolf’s features though.
Chris, are you working on anything else? Now that you seem to have some free time on your hands. and what is going to happen with coursebuilder? Will that still be the preferred way of entering courses, will there be a new mechanism or maybe no need as EA will do it all?

Aso, thanks for everything and answering the questions..better late then never :)

  14. Thankyou for the email reply and sympathising with my fustrastion. Kudos to refusing to delete my previous post with my moans.

Would love to know how much you sold the App to EA for LOL but sure you wouldn’t let on.

Whether EA will listened to user imput as to what they’d like from future updates as Chris did here is debatable IMO. The App had great promise and it’s a shame it hasn’t reach that, Chris did not follow it through and there was a lack of updates this year. Would have been nice to just see the GPS mapping working before the summer started. Maybe things would have turned out better.

    ADIOS!

  15. Chris you mentioned that the site will be available to users who don’t have the application. Do you have any ideas about whether or not EA intends to expand the application to other mobile devices, like Android or Windows Mobile?

  16. Chris,

One problem is the lack of access to the new ea website (the unresponsive login dialog is still there). But the app I downloaded earlier today also still come up with the authetification error warning when I attempt to restore. Are these problems connected, or is the version I got for .99 useless?

  17. I would call that a disasterous launch

  18. The TeeshotLive Application is not available for purchase from the Canadian App Store.

Given that there is no future upgrade path for Teeshot, as promised. How can customers go about getting a refund for their original purchase of 19.99.

Like a number of Golfers, I used the ooBGolf link quite extensively. I and about 30 of my golfing buddies, reside in an ooBGolf Group that we use to manage our own Ryder Cup. The loss of ooBgolf uplink is a major step backwards for EA Sports.

  19. Hi all.
I used to love this app, recommending it to several friends as well. Now it seems our oobgolf group is kinda useless since we no longer can upload to it from Teeshotlive. The development of this app has really not gone the way I feel was promised. Paying for basically the same app again, registering at a new site, not finding the app in the store, wrong one uploaded to the store…several months overdue. this was it for me. On to greener pastures, sadly.

  20. The TeeShotLive team at EA has a few items they wanted to clarify:

Currently the Tee Shot Live site is locked down, but the application is still usable. Course search and download work, which is all that’s needed to play a round. People that were able to get the app will just have to wait for anything upload related.

The login screen that users are prompted with during the first start up is not a sign up screen. To sign up, they will need to visit teeshotlive.ea.com when it goes live. They can update their login information under the players section of the app.

Anyone can use the Tee Shot website. Owning the app is not required.

Along with bug fixes, one of the reasons we want to wait for the fixed version is so that we can deal with migration after Apple failing to do so. The final version is needed to restore backups off of the teeshotlive.com server. With this in place they will have all of their courses, rounds, stats, etc in the new app.

For the people that got the version this morning that have mentioned crashes and issues, we’d like some more details on that kind of thing. This morning’s version has a number of crashes that were related to the maps and GPS code. So if users are seeing problems in those areas of that version, I’m hoping that most have been addressed in the final version. Please send mail to teeshotlive@ea.com with any extra details and we’ll make sure to check them out.

We’ll still be relying on the community for course creation and updates, with an improved version of the course builder on teeshotlive.ea.com.

Users can add players from the address book if the contact has an email associated with it.

There are no in app purchases in version 2.0.

We would like to eventually develop versions of Tee Shot for other platforms, but whether that happens ultimately depends on the reception of the iPhone app.

    • what about the cost? itunes currently lists the ea sports teeshotlive @ $9.99. (with by the way a message of: Your request could not be completed. The item you’ve requested is not currently available in the US store.
i don’t see why users of the original teeshot software would need to purchase anything for an upgrade to 2.0.

    • For the little it’s worth… I give up.

  21. Oh one more thing. TeeShot version 1.7.4 does not go away from your phone when you install TeeShotLive 2.0. You will just have two versions of the app on your phone. If you still want to use oobgolf for a while, you can keep using the old application. I would suggest sending a note to teeshotlive@ea.com with any features in oobgolf that are not present in TeeShotLive.ea.com so it can be improved.

    • How about we send a note to teeshotlive@ea.com and have them put the oobgolf upload option back in instead.

  22. I can’t see the new app in the UK store yet . . . any idea when it might appear?

  23. Chris,

I commend you for your readiness to try and answer our queries today, even if we can’t help airing the built-up frustrations. Thank you.

There is one issue I am still not clear about. Will there be an upgrade announcement in iTunes for the corrected version of 2.0 for those of us who managed to buy the ‘cheap’ ea version today?

  24. This is a complete farce. This is not a real upgrade as it seems to me anyone who didn’t buy the original teeshot can also purchase for 99 cents, all of us who did and were promised many things have been ripped off.

As a matter of principal I won’t spend another cent on this product, the only hassle is how to I export my 60 games from Teeshot to my new iPhone app, whatever that may be.

  25. Am I missing something? The app isn’t available when I search EA Sports app listing. Anyone else find it?

I have been a supporter of TeeShot and Chris for the last year or so, I’ve used the app and thought it offered pretty good usability, and then it fell behind on features as more apps hit the store. After paying $20 for the app I thought for sure the features would keep coming. At this point, I’m feeling like Greg wrote. If anyone can go in and buy the app for $.99 how is this an upgrade for the people that paid $20?

Very disappointed with how this was handled. Very poor business.

    Steve

  26. Yep – teeshot is dead, long live EA golf.

Good luck getting them to display the same level of support and interaction as Chris gave before the 2.0 drought.

You can bet they won’t be running a blog like this where the devs post – they have the big corporation mentality, not a lone developer working on his sole major app striving to please his users.

  27. For now, DISASTER.

    Please, we need oobgolf.

  28. The good: Chris probably made a ton of money.

The bad: Chris is abandoning a great product that will now never get attention it deserves and EA will ignore it’s customers.

  29. The chances that a video game company is going to have a clue what “real” golfers want in an app is slim, as is any chance of responsive customer support. Teeshotlive is a gnat on the elephant that is EA.

  30. In the way that this whole 2.0 release has been handled, plus the complete screw-up of its launch, I have no interest in paying $.99 for this.

Plus it’s ridiculous that Teeshot sales us on oobgolf.com and now it’s not even supported.

    This blows!

  31. Doug, I would definitely recommend you send that request to teeshotlive@ea.com. The folks from EA are watching this thread and are very interested in the feedback from the users.

    • They are?
      Well, that’s encouraging news.
Hopefully they will continue advancing the core function of teeshot and work on streamlining the data entry even more, in addition to adding new features to keep ip with the progress of the strong competion.
I’m looking forward to at least trying out the new version once the site is live.

Hopefully they will also have the resources to start building up the database of gps logged cources as well now.

  32. I submitted to teeshotlive@ea.com the following message. I would encourage everyone else who shares my issues to do so as well.

As a longtime Teeshot supporter, as well as EA Sports application supporte , I would like to express my extreme dissatisfaction with the application purchase process of Teeshot, as it relates to the existing customer base. If you are following the Teeshot Blog http://blog.teeshotlive.com/2009/09/28/big-changes-with-tee-shot-live/ you will see that I am not alone regarding these issues:

    1) As I understand it, TeeshotLive will be offered for .99 for a limited time period. I paid 19.99 for Teeshot, and Chris has made many mentions that future upgrades, including 2.0 will not cost any additional fee. Now not only do we have to pay a sum, but any new customer can pay just .99, which saves significantly compared to the existing user base. That hardly seems the way to manage existing and loyal clients.
    2) As I understand it, oobgolf support was removed. This was something that I personally have pushed to more than 30 plus of my golfer friends, as a common place to record our golfing information (we use it for tournament play). We are logging nearly 50 rounds per week on the site, and to ask us to switch (after teeshot recommended the site in the first place) is unacceptable. Like many other Teeshot users, oobgolf has become a major part of our tracking, and if it is does not exist, I would rather move to another app that supports oobgolf uploads, than manually re-enter all the scores and data. In other words, the new web services function has no value, when a well established and supported service already exists.
    3) As of this communication TeeShotLive was not available in the Canadian App store. If briefly appeared; however, downloading of it was prohibited. There was no mention of this with the release. It appears this also applies to some other countries as well.

I would kindly appreciate your feedback regarding these issues,

    Regards,
    Malcolm

  33. I really don’t want to pay 99cents for this upgrade. Especially if, as suggested earlier, that newbies pay the same.

This blows. Its bad etiquette and, above all, FOUL PLAY!

EA’s quality assurance team may scoff at te suggestion, but you should really try and do better by ALL of your existing customer base.

    BAAAD! REALLY BAAAAAAD!

  34. Comment 2:

Your existing customer base built the application insofar as they (we) have added the course information ourselves. Having done ALL that work for YOU, I suggest to you, at EA Sports, that your success should be shared by us. In the form of a FREE update.

You stand on the shoulders of ALL who’ve come before.

  35. This is great feedback folks and I can assure you that it is getting through to folks on the team.

The one thing I want to mention is the upgrade process and the $0.99 thing. We spent months working with Apple on a way to migrate the existing users over. That is a significant part of the reason that this version took so long to get out. We were told that they could do this and then just a couple of weeks ago they said that they couldn’t. Since all EA applications need to be shipped through their own accounts this left us with very few options and no way to provide a different price for new users and existing users. We can only do what Apple allows us to do in the App Store. I totally understand the frustration of being asked to pay more for the update, even if it is just 0.99 but I don’t understand being upset with new users being able to get that price too. We can give a discounted price or we cannot, but we just don’t have an option to do different pricing for existing users, even though we would love to be able to.

    -Chris

  36. Chris, wasn’t it possible to list the itunes accounts of people who bought 1.7.4 as owners of the 2.0 app from the start?

I’ve reinstalled my iphone lately, and when ‘buying’ apps I aquired earlier would popup saying I already owned that app, “would you like to download it again?”.. the app would be free for existing users.

Anyhow, I’m completely fine with the $0.99. I just hope it’ll be out today, teeing off in 9 hrs :)

  37. but we are in limbo again to when the app is going to be released in the store. some people have stuck by you and bought the upgrade only to have it pulled from the store and are unable to use the new web service. its a bad launch all round after all this time and i dont blame anyone for switching apps.

  38. Chris – Thanks for all the app (V1.74) and thanks for all the hard work and support you put into it. It is fully understandable that you sold to EA (good app going to a good brand) and I think we can understand why the lack of “service” has crept in.

EA – You have bought a great little app, you have the resources to make it a brilliant app…now don’t go and screw it up! . As you can see on theis blog site, you have also bought a passionate user base – we are frustrated at the moment. Do whatever it takes to WOW us – not because you feel you have, do it because you can!

Chris – I like your development ideas and your history of customer service. I have this little app that needs a bit of work on it. Since you will soon be out of a job I was wondering if you can take it a bit further for me. I would like to call it “Teeshot 3.0″.

  39. While I’m not happy paying additional money for an app I’ve already paid for.99c (59p in my UK funny money) is not going to kill me. So I’ll be begrudgingly upgrading. End of they day I will, hopefully, getting a great app for a small ‘extra’ cost.

Again, I’m a big user of OOBGolf and this will severely diminish the usefulness of the new version. So that would be right at the top of my list of must have enhancements !

The other thing is if this is going to be 99c for a limited period. How are other teeshot users going to be notified of the upgrade path ? App store won’t tell them ! I’m sure you only have a fraction who check this blog and would know what’s going on.

If you think the frustration is high now, wait until all the other customers find out when all of a sudden the current version stops working somewhere down the line and are told it’s going to cost them something like $20 to upgrade !!

It will be interesting to understand EA’s plans for this app. It is an odd acquisition, perhaps they are looking at some game integration\tie in. Could be interesting ?

My biggest concern is that this isn’t part of EA’s core business, and probably not going to be a big money spinner (Compared to their current business) unless they are looking at adding some subscription extra based ’services’. So I could see EA dropping this product if it’s not a commercial success.

After all they are a commercial business in it for the money, and if they have a multiple person team dedicated to this product development and support they are going to have to re-coup that cost somehow.

But we will see I guess.

    • I am slightly worried by that Tee Shot Live Golf Pro link at the top of some of the screenshots. My guess is it’s either a blog, support link or some sort of subscription service.

  40. I just tried to have a look at the new website, but it asks me for a username and password. do we have a username and password in teeshot?
I have been using teeshot very long, so I don’t have a clue whether I ever entered anything like this. Should there be one, is it possible to find out which i used?
    Thanks for your help Chris.

  41. Chris,

Respectfully, I disagree with your comment about not understanding why people are upset with new purchasers being able to get this for $0.99. While it’s definitely within a developers right to charge whatever price they want, there is also reasonable business practices that effect the way a company is viewed.

While I can understand that it’s possibly a complicated issue to convert current user database into EA Sports database (although I’m not sure why that really is not achievable), there seems to be another way that this could have been handled. I think the best way to have handled this (once you all found out that the conversion couldn’t be done) is to release this through your account and then convert over to EA Sports database.

    Steve

    • I’m fairly certain this was because of an Apple process. They probably didn’t have a way to merge the two application publishers in their store. Also I’m guessing there’s no way that EA would acquire something and then not have their name all over it, that would just be bad business.

  42. Ryan,

Bad business? As opposed to whats going on now?

    Steve

    • And what is going on right now. To me it looks like Apple published the wrong version, Apple couldn’t migrate our purchases and a lot of people are complaining about nothing. Although I agree on the OOBGolf point, and I really don’t think anyone will get anywhere complaining to EA. If they are launching an online service they will definitely not willingly let you use a competitor. From what I see in the screenshots it looks like a pretty nice site though. Hopefully they will create some apps for other mobile devices as well.

      • Ryan,

Whats going on is that the upgrade that was promised free is not free, the app that we paid $19.99 for is now basically given away to the masses for a mere $0.99. On top of it, some of us have many rounds of golf uploaded to Oobgolf to keep an official handicap, among other things. Without knowing any of the details of the EA Site I will hold judgment on that part of it for now.e

Is it the end of the world, no, of course not. But there is a right way and a wrong way to do things and this just doesn’t seem right to me. Especially given the patience waiting for the free upgrade and amount of work current users have done manually putting courses and their GPS data into TeeShots database.
I agree with you about the complaining to EA about the OObgolf thing, although I sent in my two cents to them.

        Steve

      • I understand that, but really the only group I see at fault here is Apple. Also about the having rounds already uploaded to OOBGolf, you can backup and restore your rounds from the old app to the new and then re-post them to the EA site.

I assume the 0.99 is there for the reason you state, so not everyone and their grandmother will download the app for shits and giggles and so we can have a reasonably cheap upgrade path. By the time everyone realizes at 0.99 the app is a great deal I’m guessing the price will be back up to $9.99 (what I expect the full price to be).

  43. “It sounds like V2.0 is a whole new app (maybe at a new higher price point) and thats why you’d have to have acount migration for all us who paid for V1.7 to upgrade free to V2.0, and thats why we have addiontional steps needed to get V2.0. Could be wrong but thats my 2 cents worth.”

And you were almost right Stewie

  44. I am sorry to announce I have deflected to Golfcard.

I have refrained from commenting for quite a few weeks, hoping that something great would come upon us, but it has been deception after deception.

I have loved Teeshot from the moment it came out, I have ‘contaminated’ many of my golf friends with it, but my love has unfortunately faded.
The unannounced sacking of oobgolf, the price for upgrading and the complete lack of reaction or announcements etc. from EA’s side make me fear about their commitment towards Teeshot. Is their PR department hibernating or do they not want to wake any customers yet, in order for them to have the old Teeshot owners silently ‘upgrade’ and have new customers pay the full price?
If I had bought Teeshot I would have been proud to announce it. I would have screamed from the roofs how happy I was and what a bright future I saw, all along with the happy customer base.

Chris, thank you so much for all the efforts you put into the brilliant program and your patience in customer service. You really listened to your customers and made us feel like one big family.
    I will miss it!
    Vaya con dios!

    • Why would they announce a product which isn’t even their core business AND one that they haven’t even launched yet.

      • Ryan,

Companies purchasing other companies make announcements all the time when the sale is made. I hadn’t thought about it until Jerry posted it but I’m now wondering why all the shrouded secrecy behind this. Really was it that ‘big of a deal’ to announce it? And looking back if things were on the up and up, out front so to speak, maybe people wouldn’t be looking for other apps.

My last post on this blog thread, I promise. You seem to be appologetic to the two companies involved while pointing a finger at Apple for screwing up everything. Seems like you haven’t clearly thought out the implications of marketing mishaps along the way that could have been handled differently by EA and Chris.

        Steve

  45. Chris,

You say the folks from EA are watching this thread, well then how about some input from some of them?

Why are they not responding to any of our questions/complaints?

Is this a sign of whats to come?

    Doug

  46. Chris, Thanks for taking the time to email me…I know you said they do not have a version of coursebuilder in the works but will the existing version still work? Maybe a little tweak to where the courses upload? And is there gonna be a further migration of data from one server to the other? So if i uploaded a course today…it wouldn’t just disappear.

    • He actually said this:

“We’ll still be relying on the community for course creation and updates, with an improved version of the course builder on teeshotlive.ea.com.”

      • I saw that, I was wondering solely about the downloaded app. Just if it was still going to be functional in it’s current form.

    • I’m hoping it will include the Google Maps API to allow us to geotag the greens easier.

  47. I have been an early adopter and at one point was hyping this product to my friends.
Well, after this much heralded update not coming to pass and with the additional fee and low entry point for new users I am not interested in this app anymore. I have moved on to a new app that has much easier scoring ability, much improved course interface along with maps that don’t require you to do yourself. In the world of fast changing SW this app has failed miserably to keep up.

    • So you’ve been hyping this to your friends who can now buy it for only 0.99 and you’re going to tell them to switch to another app which will cost much more? I’m sure one of your friends will laugh in your face and spot you the buck.

      • Well, for .99 that’s about all it’s worth, so they can go for it. I have already show them the new app and they have opted for it and not for teeshot.

  48. With all the chatter on here, not once has EA made any official remarks or comments. They haven’t even mentioned golf shot on their website, even the one specific to the iphone/touch platform.

I find it curious that they acquire the product, and make NO public effort to support the user base. Sometime ago I sold my software company to a big firm, and they put the customer front and center.

If I do not get any official response from EA regarding oobgolf support, and some of these noted issues, I will assume EA has a complete disregard for any existing customer, and will move over to GolfCard. After all, a transition will only cost 4.00

    • Don’t assume that EA even considers current Tee Shot users to be customers. Whe were Chris’ customers; we paid him for the app. We have paid nothing to EA and aren’t customers until we do so. They’re business plan may well be to start fresh and go after new customers who will be drawn to the brand, the type that are less likely to be posting to blogs like this.

I find it interesting that Apple’s App Store has set up this peculiar paradigm in which developers sell a product to customers for what are usually very low prices and then are expected to continue delivering updates and new-and-improved versions of the product to the same customers–who have already paid and expect never to have to pay again. This can’t possibly be a sustainable business plan. Product developers are concerned about the customers who may bring more cash in the future for the new-and-improved. Don’t be surprised when the new in-app payment capabilities put an end this paradigm relatively quickly.

I paid $19.95 for the original version of Tee Shot. It’s been improved by Chris a few times at no additional cost to me. Where I come from, that’s considered a freebee. There was no contract signed to required that improvement. Now Chris has done what some consider to be the American business dream: develop a product at relatively low cost (I am assuming) and sell it to the big boys for profit (again, assuming). Good for him. The fact that I can now get the new “improved” version from the big boy for 1/20th of the original cost is still a bargain, as long as the app is still what I want.

I bought Tee Shot because I was looking for a scorekeeping and statistics management app. Meanwhile, others and other apps have gone for GPS paradise, trying to be marginally accurate rangefinders rather than enhanced scorecards. I want the latter, not the former. Golf Shot does not offer improved scorekeeping and statistics. And I found OOBGolf seriously lacking. So I’m hoping EA’s version meets my needs; it still might.

Finally, what’s with those jumping ship in anger. Since when is any consumer product, let alone a cell phone app, a source of community and identity. It’s a product! Buy it or don’t buy it; use it or don’t use it–but your decision neither significant or of consequence to anyone but you. I come to this blog for product information; instead, I have to wade through repetitive, inconsequential whining. You’d think this were a product for pre-teens and not adult. It cost 20 bucks, people–20 freaking bucks. Move on!

  49. Did I say Golf Shot… ooops

Now I mentioned two other products in one comment.

  50. Very very quiet about the launch around here today

  51. So….another day has passed and the site is still not up and running.

Seriously, without slagging off Teeshot (which I think I can safely say WAS a fantastic product), what is the best app out there at the moment? And at what price? I need something fast, easy to use, should be able to cater for “rings” (more than 2 over par) and should ideally be able to handle the pathetic South African handicapping system. GPS would be a nice add-on. Graphical stats are a must.

Obviously EA don’t give a rats @rse about our concerns on this blog so I suggest we use it to discuss golf apps in general…?

  52. I want to know what app can provide statistics for every shot I take, club, distance and where it ends up, ta

  53. i sent an email to teeshotlive@ea.com yesterday questioning to new website and when the app would be available.
Here are their responses. (I will say they were quick to respond)

Q1: When will the new teeshotlive website be up and working? When I try to go to TeeShotLive.ea.com I just get a sign in box asking for username/password? It is my understanding that I should be taken to a site where I can register.

A1: The EA SPORTS Tee Shot Live team genuinely appreciates your interest in the new web site. We are planning to open the site once the official release version of the Tee Shot Live iPhone application is in the iTunes app store. How did you hear about the site e.g., have you already purchased the version of the app that appeared briefly in the iTunes store this morning?

Q2: I heard about the site through a blog on the original TeeShot website. It was posted by the guy how created the first TeeShot app.
Is there an ETA on the official release of the updated app? What about the cost? I previously purchased TeeShot v1.7.4 and do not feel it appropriate to have to pay again since this is basically an upgrade.

A2: We are waiting on final approval of the application by Apple which should be within a few short weeks. The team worked extremely hard to make this version an upgrade but unfortunately the iTunes infrastructure just wasn’t able to make it happen.

While this is not the ideal situation for everyone, we are offering a promotional price of $.99 to ease this transition.

  54. “A few short weeks”, thats the straw that broke the camels back for me. Goodluck with everything

  55. A few short weeks. That’s brilliant, that is…

This whole episode, if you can call such a 6-month long saga, has been a staggering example of how not to manage customer expectations.

In march we learn of a new version 2.0 and wait until August to finally hear the news we’ve been holding out for; release date Sept 1. But it turns out that was just wishful thinking.

Four weeks later, and once again the carrot is waved in front of our noses. But it’s a raw carrot, which is fine, but not what the cook intended. So the wait continues.

Now, the new proprietors of all this come out with the claim it’s going to be yet more weeks of waiting. Thank God it’s only a sodding golf scoring application; it’s hilarious!!

I am, of course, expecting too much… Yes, damn right. By the time this application is released, I’m expecting my iPhone 4G-wiz to have arms and legs and hit the bloody golf ball for me!!!

  56. FEW WEEKS ?.
    IS THAT A JOKE ?.

    THIS IS SO RIDICULOS.

  57. ive just created a account at the new ea website if anyones interested, still no app no

  58. it looks pretty nifty as well

  59. Site up and running. Looking neat and tidy.
Created account and checked that courses I have created are there. Looking good.

No scores are there and getting username doesn’t exist error on iPhone. Can’t seem to change this anywhere…expecting feature to be enabled on next version released on Apple.

Have backed up old 1.74 data (again) to Teeshotlive and am hoping beyond hope that this data will find its way into teashot.ea.com at some stage so I can restore it into new app when released.

Thanks EA for showing signs of life. I don’t expect to use the site much going forward unless the stats look really pretty! I really just want a decent app on the phone.

What’s the $0.00 thing at the top? Heard some people suggest subscription options…? I am not keen on paying anymore for the app, website or other. According to my wife I spend far too much on golf already.

  60. Trying to map course on teeshot.ea.com. Interface looks great but doesn’t work… Trying to drag and drop flag into centre of green with no success. Can’t change co-ordinates for course/hole position.

  61. Scrap that…PEBKAC (Problem exists between keyboard and chair). Click on Apply Co-ordinates and then everything seems to work.

Seems nice and easy. Well done on this feature EA!

  62. Yeah, I just mapped a course too – easier than the old app, but I was dismayed to find that the courses which used to have greens mapped no longer do.

Are we expected to enter them all in again?!?!

  63. Can we upload our scores from previous rounds on Teeshot to the new EA website? Would hate to waste all that info if we can’t.

  64. How do you map courses on the new site??

  65. Just checked old course info and mapping was included…expect for the 18th hole! For some reason it was mapped on the other side of the world! LOL. I am not sure if it was an import problem but the “-” was missing from the latitude…a long 34000Km walk from the 17th to the 18th!! All sorted now.

    • David,

How did you manage that? I have the exact same problem with my home course (also in 1.7.4 where I couldn’t correct it either, not even when I re-entered all the coordinates).

  66. Nick, as mentioned I think it is best to wait for the new app to upload old info…??

Click on courses, view course details, edit, click on 03. Centre of green. Click on Apply co-ordinates, drag flag to where you want it and then click on apply co-ordinates again for next flag etc. Click on save and view profile.

For a new course I would presume do similar after entering basic course info.

Obviously we cant download the info to our phones at the moment….!

  67. Cheers David, just my luck Google doesn’t have detailed coverage of my course Craigielaw in East Lothian.

  68. see thats all we need to keep us happy

  69. Pleasure Nick. Google coverage over South Africa isn’t great either but we can get by.

Phil, you are right…EA just has to give us a toy or two to play with and it will make us forget all the s**t that has gone before………for a while.

  70. yeah, site is looking good. Had a bit of a play this morning.

    Mapped my course – again.
    Added some equipment
    Added a scorecard manually.

    Few observations

Wouldn’t let me use my existing EA Gamertag as my EA ID.
Mapping is easy – Would be better if the map for the next flag started from where the last one was.
    Can’t edit a scorecard once it’s saved.
Some of the stats reports didn’t work – might be because I only had one score though.
Gives you a vs par by hole type report. But it’s based on 28 Hcp. Couldn’t find anywhere to set my real hcp.
There looks like there is a feature to see shot for shot tracking on a course map. That should be cool.

Can’t see any forum options yet to post this kind of feedback.

    • Just found a submit suggestion option under the TeeShotLive Golf Pro area. Top right menu.

Suggest we all make a little time to take a look and submit some feedback to improve the site whilst we wait for the app.

    • I think this sign in is the same one you use for your gamertag if you have any EA games on xbox 360 so there may be a way to sign in and use the same gamertag. If it doesn’t work, you might want to send a mail to teeshotlive@ea.com.

Great suggestion to send feedback on things you like/want to see.

  71. Ok,

This is very annoying, I have waited ages and it’s finally released, but it’s not available in the New Zealand Itunes Store. How do I get the new App before the price goes up?????????????????

    Shailen

    • It’s not available anywhere right now. Some of us got it when it was posted for a short time yesterday, but it has been removed from the store since then.

  72. Has anyone been able to find where your handicap is?

  73. Also I’ve noticed quite a few of the courses I had added are not available on the site.

  74. All of the courses from TeeShotLive.com should be available on the new site but they may need to run some more imports for ones that were added or updated in the past few weeks.

The GPS information from existing courses should be there. If it isn’t let just send mail to teeshotlive.ea.com with details on which course. You can still confirm it is there on the old site by searching for it there.

Once the new app is out, you can do a data restore on your phone and it should bring in your data from the old site (that is one of the features that wasn’t in the version that was posted on Monday). Then you can upload your rounds to TeeShotLive.ea.com by choosing Share Round in the round screen.

    -Chris

    • Any comment on the lack of Handicap on the new website?

      • Who needs handicap or a way to submit rounds to oobgolf or UShandicap?? I guess EA figures we’re better off spending our time playing Tiger Woods 10.

      • Kevin,

I thought you were leaving. Please don’t stay around for us. I promise you, we won’t miss you.

  75. Years later this will be the case discussed in college, “about loosing customers satified with a product”. I invest not a minute anymore I just bought Golfcard.

  76. I’m just wondering has anyone who has signed up for the new site and submitted bugs to the teeshotlive user, if you’ve received responses yet. Trying to figure out if that mailbox is being monitored yet.

  77. Not happy about the wait either, but what a bunch of whiners!
All the worst that EA could do has been imagined on this site. We have no information, which I would agree is not the way to win over/keep customers, but give them a chance to show you what they are going to do. If you liked the product before the wiffs about an upgrade then why are you now jumping ship and paying for something you have no idea how it works or what would happen going forward.

  78. The teeshotlive.ea.com website is up! Too bad the app is not around for download….and i can confirm that the Teeshotlive Golf pro link in the upper right hand corner is for a blog.

  79. Teeshot 2.0 is live in the Appstore! I downloaded it and it seems to have a bunch of random crashes. And i can’t seem to download my data by restore.

  80. not in australia store yet

  81. Yep – bought the new 2.0 app for $0.99

Tried to restore my data I’d previously uploaded from 1.74, but it didn’t work for me either.

I’ve made the first post on the TeeShot live support forum:

    http://forum.ea.com/eaforum/categories/show/186.page

    • I was looking for that, couldn’t find it…have you seen any random crashes? I am not sure if it is the app or my phone…I almost want to bet it is the phone.

  82. Crashes for me too, even after rebooting the phone. :(

Download a course, go to a hole, view the hole map, click the button to go back to the hole details = crash.

    • i think if you go to the teeshotlive golf pro “blog”, they mention that they are updating the site…and they also mention the updating of courses and rounds. I think they are working on the problem already….probably decided to migrate the data again when they went live and it hasn’t finished or been set up for the restore to the new download area.

  83. Many crashes, consistent with above.

Also, in map view, it says hole 1 of Bethpage Black lies in the middle of a highway.

I have been a loyal TeeShot user for over a year, but this new version does not inspire confidence. It is disappointing to see that EA chose to release a product with such obvious flaws. My guess is that they figured people like me would be early adopters, spot the bugs, and save EA the effort. I wonder if the cost savings from this policy will offset the lost income from a product with a 1 star rating from people like me.

  84. It turns out the app crashes whenever you exit viewing a google maps view.
The rest of it seems to work OK though – the shot entry is more streamlined and the stats filtering is nice.
The always-on GPS should help position recording speed too.

The mapping was the big new feature though, so it’s a pity that wasn’t tested a little more before release.

Still, happy to have it at last.
I’m unsubscribing from this blog now – see you all on the EA forums :)

  85. I got the new app finally. Love the stats filtering, very cool. I also noticed that Chris is listed in About Tee Shot Live as “Special Thanks” What is up with that?

  86. App hasn’t arrived in the UK yet.

Hopefully it will get here before lunctime as I’m playing this afternoon so can give it a bit of a work out.

  87. Was one of the first to download on Monday – V2.0.18. I see that the latest is V2.0.19 but my phone wont find the update.

Would I be charged again if I downloaded it again?

    • David,

I got this answer from EA support:

“You shouldn’t have any problems updating the version of Tee Shot Live that you downloaded yesterday to version 2.0.19 when it hits the iTunes App Store. It will be treated as a regular update. Once the new version of Tee Shot Live is in the iTunes App Store you will have the ability to restore data that you backed up to Chris’ server into the new app. This means that the new app will have all of the courses, rounds, players, etc that you had saved in Teeshot v1.x. You shouldn’t lose anything.

Don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any other questions.”

      • Thanks for this Lisa!

Back in the hands of the wormy Apple then while I wait for the update to be available. I just wish the USA was not considered the centre of the universe the whole time….but I do have an occasional chuckle when I think that they have a “golf season”. Shame.

  88. Got the 2.0 version. Hate it. App crashes on maps. Can’t add a player from the address book. When I do, it calls the person. What the heck happened.

    • you add the player by clicking his email address….if you click the phone number it will call him

  89. oh, yea. Why the heck is the gps mapping always on. my battery didn’t make it through 9 holes and it was fully charged. Also because the gps mapping is turned on the phone got very hot.

  90. If you use the the wall button on the website, you will see news updates from Teeshotlive.

  91. anyone have any ides when the app will hit other countries’ stores

  92. Not in MEXICO store, any idea why, when, PLEASE Chris ?

  93. As I mentioned earlier, I have given up. Just FYI, I am trying out GolfCard – full integration with OOBGolf, able to download courses from OObGolf. Different interface, so will take a bit of time to get used to it, some things better some not so good. Still have to reenter all my exiting games, but shouldn’t take too long. And the App is only US$7.99.

This is my last post on this blog. Good luck to those of you who persevere.

    • “able to download courses from OObGolf”

Isn’t that against OOBGolf’s Terms of Service?

  94. FYI. For those of you looking for alternatives. Airvue golf has done a major overhaul of the interface and if very comparible (if not a bit better) to Golfshot. Plus I believe it’s 9.99 vs 29.99

  95. i am not happy we have been messed around for months.

  96. And we have to pay again.

  97. New version has appeared in local store. Presume it is available all over now.

  98. Restore still doesn’t work. F&£)(!

  99. just wanna express my disappointment with Chris and his new EA teeshot team…like many ppl here i was waiting eagerly for the ”update” as well…now it turns out we have to pay again? wtf!?!?!

    Golfshot GPS ftw!!

  100. Seriously? You’re going to go pay $30 to avoid paying $1? And for those folks paying $7 to avoid paying $1, go for it, but man Golf Card is one ugly piece of software. I agree that EA should not have taken out oobgolf and I think we should all push them to put it back in again, but for me, TeeShot is still the best and most complete golf app out there.

  101. They are paying $30 to get a much better and current app, not to avoid paying $1. Even after the update, teeshot can’t compete. I paid the 99 cents just in case EA does something miraculous with it (which I doubt).

Golfshot gives you an interface that is comparible or better than the Callaway Upro. With a gps overview of each hole and the ability to tap and hold to check the distance to (or over) any hazard. You can also zoom in for a green view.

The gps functionality in Teeshot is not intuitive at all and still relies on the user mapping each course.

To me, I’d rather spend $30 and have a database of over 15,000 courses, then spend my time having to map every new course I play (because there are very few that are already mapped).

Teeshot is hardly the best golf app out there.

  102. I’ve used Golfshot and it does look nice though it is missing a bunch of things (like shot by shot tracking) that TeeShot has. Perhaps that simplicity is a plus but a lot of us really want to have the distance information for all of our clubs. I’ve also found it very hard to figure out how to measure shot distances in Golfshot whereas doing it in TeeShot is simple — just set the location before each shot and done! Also, the flow of input in Golfshot is a little odd (why do I need to wait until I’ve scored the hole to say which club I used off the tee?). I do like their GPS course mapping though and it would be good for TeeShot to get more mapping locations for each hole.

Golfcard, though, is a mess whose only redeeming quality is that it supports oobgolf.

  103. Guys. Just in case you haven’t seen this EA are running a poll on the new support forum for OOB support in the new app.

So if you want it better vote !

    http://forum.ea.com/eaforum/posts/list/318515.page

  104. Good points Rob. FYI to measure shot distance in golfshot, you just tap the large golf ball with the hole number in the upper left corner of the screen. It starts tracking your shot. Tap it again and it gives you the distance.

The flow for scoring and then recording fairway, sand/penalty info is a little different, but for me, the linear progression through the screens reminds me to enter everything. Back when I was using teeshot, I constantly forgot to enter penalty strokes, or fairways.

Tracking every club isn’t important to me, so I don’t miss that in Golfshot. I found it distracting and I play better when I concentrate more on my game and less on data entry. With golfshot it just takes a few seconds after each hole to enter the score and fairway/sand/penalty into. Plus being able to tap and hold on the screen and measure exactly how far it is to the front of that pond is invaluable.

I agree about Golf Card, not the best.

    Kevin

  105. Dropped in to check the status of the update and see its now EA sports. Its $9.95 now since I had no clue an update as another version was ready. I would have paid the .99 if I had know. Anyway to get this price again as I am an existing customer of the product.

  106. I’m in the same boat as Mark. Just checked into this website and found that Tee Shot has changed hands.

Now how in the world do I get the 99 cents version after paying 20 bucks for this the first time around Chris?

  107. Your best bet now is to contact the EA support folks at teeshotlive@ea.com and they may be able to help you out with a promotional code or something so you can get the update without paying $9.95 again.
